Do I have rumble seat hinges or trunk hinges?
I may have answered my own question by researching the GM Heritage archives. Apparently the rumble seat was not an option for the 5 window coupe. Just for the Standard coupe. I have a Master for sure according to the data plate. The 1934 Standard never had 5 windows.
My 1934 Chevy Master came with a nice deck lid but it wasn’t attached to the body or any hinges. The trunk opening has/had original wood framing and a rotten rain trough. Looking at the hinges, I just couldn’t see how they could work for a trunk because there is a flange at the middle pivot point that doesn’t allow movement like I would expect for a trunk. I could see how it might work for a rumble seat. I hope the pictures will help you see well enough to tell me if I these are rumble seat hinges. Video too.

Does the wood of bracing have 4 studs, two on the top half of the wood? Something like this? To me yours looks like a rumble seat. I have a similar pivot bracket but it has a place that’s goes on the side of the deck lid and bolts to a brace under the trunk rail area. I think the pivots are the same you just switch them around upload_2024-3-6_20-54-7.jpeg

My deck lid didn’t have any wood bracing attached. I got a pile of wood with my purchase, most of which appears to be either new pieces or salvage pieces from another Chevy. For instance, I have a new set of wood framing pieces for the door interior structure and external door framing too.
Anyway, I found some wood in the pile that seems correct for a deck lid. Pic shows some of it laid on the underside of my deck lid. IMG_4607.jpeg IMG_4618.jpeg IMG_4926.jpeg

nice man that deck lid is in good condition, I've been seeing your posts on the hot rod page on facebook. You're making a lot of progress!

  5. Looking at your lid, the giveaway here is that your deck lid panel has the handle at the bottom, where a rumble lid has the handle at the top, like mine. Another fact is that a rumble car has a triangular shape "stop" at the rear of your trunk floor by the panel under the deck lid to stop the rumble lid so the rumble seats are in the correct position to sit on - the seat back is mounted on the rumble lid that pivots and the bottom cushion is mounted to the floor. Honestly, the rumble lid creates a problem with access to your taillights, barely enough room to get your hand in the taillight area to maintain them. This is the sole reason that I'm switching my rumble lid to a trunk lid, opening it the opposite way. I just may have to sort out finding a bottom trunk lid latch to lock the lid to a degree. This is why I strongly believe that all '31 Chevy coupes and roadsters are rumble cars.

The owner of a 1934 Chevy Master coupe on another forum shared this picture with me last evening. Now I understand everything. I am missing the piece of the hinge that bolts to the deck lid, and then wraps under to bolt to the body. It appears the elbow section of the hinge is intended to go slightly past 180°, and then interfere with the flange so that it acts as a stop to keep the deck lid open. IMG_4928.jpeg

  7. I will be hunting for this part that will help turning my rumble lid to a trunk lid as shown. Appreciate this photo bigtime!

  9. Yes, or something similar where I can adapt to my trunk lid. Just do not want to use some new style part, ideally, an original Chevrolet, Ford, etc. If it squeaks, the better no?

I hadn’t worked the hinges ect for my deck lid, but if I don’t use mine it’s yours.

I’m going to do one of those pop style latches to keep it close. I only have about an inch under my last louver so it won’t work. I’d need to cut out a couple louvers which I’m not willing to do

    Here ya go

Pretty excited to get the body back on and hear it crank. I broke it in and it’s been sitting for a few months. Yes sir all 4 carbs running. Had to grab a regular because of the pressure. Here the exhaust, still going to run like a 45 from the straight so it drops downa bit IMG_7651.jpeg

  24. Really tough! Did you fabricate the center x-member or purchase one like I did, from another make and modified it after trimming down? Nice job on your "Z'd rear frame, figured it was done after noticing the lowered rear! Smitty's mufflers, or possibly Cherry Bombs?

Yeah frame is made from scratch in the garage. Rear of frame is z’s and slightly tapered down as well as it gets close to the rear.
I want to run smitties but these are just some generic ebay stainless steel glass packs.

  26. Pat yourself on the back (if you are able) - homemade frame from scratch is quite an achievement! Those stainless steel glasspacks are quite good enough!
