Test your Aussie engine IQ

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Flattiesteve, Sep 9, 2004.

  1. Gday guys

    Here's a teaser..
    Can you identify this engine?
Originally a BMW design and then built by GM in the US then the poms wanted a go and finally we made our own Aussie version.

Hint - the donor car was advertised as being able to hold a 44 gallon drum in the boot.
    Fingers crossed the image works:

I would say from the 44gallon comment it would be a Leyland P76 engine, an all alloy 4.4L which was a copy of the British Rover 3.5L alloy V8 which was based on a Buick nailhead motor but the BMW connection I don't know was there, explain please. hmmm. :) By the way your photo link hasnt worked.

  5. i can see it - am I the only one?
    Hows this?

no the 3.5l engine was NOT based from the nailhead thats another design, the 215 was shared though by olds, buick and rover, but it is not a nailhead design at all...

the only reason you see it is because it is in your cache.
for us to see it we have to go to the same photoalbum and then back here so it loads from our cache.
(or its because the fotki.com site won't show it to us
because its a direct link and we havent been there) either way it don't work to direct link pics from that site afaik..

so save it and upload it to the hamb instead

I know there was a 6 cyl inline BMW engine that was licence built by Bristol.(UK)
And the Austin 7 was licence built by BMW.
And the BMW motor cycle was the bike that the Russian Ural motorcycle was based on.
I have no clue which BMW engine was built in the US, or that there was a BMW/GM connection...

Now show me the damn picture!!! [IMG]

  10. HHHHMMMMM!!!!! the P76 would have to be one of the ugliest and poorly assembled cars to come out of this country ever! [IMG]And if you want to haul a 44gal drum around by a truck. [IMG]

  14. And why the fuck is wheels magazine held in such high reguard is beyond me. Wasn't a Hyundia awarded "Wheels car of the year". Well I guess the P76 is in good company.
