I've made this black&white scan some time back from a hardcopy someone had once made for me. Recently I did a bit of digital coloring in it and now I'm going to print this out as a 11-foot wide mural in my garage. (I've got a high-resolution version of this scan on the computer at work.) But I'm curious of the location of this place. Does anyone happen to know this print or where the picture might have been taken?
I think there's a good chance that the pic is in one of the Library of Congress picture collections online, and if so there may be identification of photog and place.
There is a collection of 1940's color pics on there somewhere--I didn't manage to find them today. They got a lot of discussion here about a year ago... That one would be very typical of the collection I have in mind. I did try "Texaco" as a search word in one of the BW collections, and found old gas station pics...
Bruce, maybe this one??? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=139512&highlight=service+stations
I've seen that picture recently. Shorpy, Life, or here on the HAMB, or just Google Images? Can't remember. but it was the BW version.
After some Google-searching I just found a pic of the same photo; http://www.geocities.com/andy_k_250/Images/AndreasFeininger-TexacoStationOnRoute66.jpg The picturename says "AndreasFeininger" & "Route 66"; A search on Andreas Feininger reveals some more of his pictures.
Here's a version in BW, different cropping or perhaps angle: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...+1948+%22texaco+station%22&as_st=y&hl=en&sa=G
Ok, I also located 2 (actually 3 but 2 are the same) versions of this photo in the LIFE-gallery on Google images; Location: Seligman, AZ, US Date taken: September 1947 1st pic 2nd pic Thanks for the leads guys. Perhaps I can 'upgrade' the scanned image I've got with these pics as I see my scan is heavily contrasted.
