So I took the advice of ElJefe and Hotwheel and registered the '38 as an antique vehicle to avoid any scrutinous inspections. It worked golden, but now I have this incredibly UGLY Texas "antique vehicle" plate. What are the laws in Texas on running vintage plates? Or can you get personalized antique plates? Anything to get rid of this terrible looking thing on the back of my car!!!!!

Get a pair of 1938 Texas plates. They are gold with black numbers. Bring 'em to TxDot and they'll give you a little metal tag to run with 'em. There's a guy in S.A named Jessie that deals in plates. He prolly has some NOS for '38.

I'll try to find his card, but it's been a while.

Please do post up the guy's contact info. My source of old plates died last year. I've been looking for another source for awhile now.

Like BUZZARD said, you can run year-of-manufacture plates if you can find a set that are in good condition - gotta have the matched set. The govt folks want to see them - in person or photo-copy - to approve their condition. Once they approve them, you only need to run the rear plate. You will have to run the little metal tag with it, as BUZZARD said.

Only exception to finding a matched set is finding a dealer plate if they were issued as singles in 1938.

Also try Roy Carroll (972-495-2858, or groycar@cs.com) for TX plates.

Here's a link to "The Law" if you want to print it and take it to the DMV, I always hate to go unarmed.

    http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/tn.toc.htm

Go to Title 7, Section 504.501

§ 504.501. CLASSIC MOTOR VEHICLES. (a) The department
shall issue specialty license plates for a motor vehicle that is at
least 25 years old. The license plates must include the words
"Classic Auto," "Classic Motorcycle," or "Classic Truck" or a
    similar designation, as appropriate.
    (b) A person eligible for the license plates may instead use
license plates that were issued by this state in the same year as
the model year of the vehicle and are approved by the department.
The department may require the attachment of a registration
insignia to the license plate in a manner that does not affect the
display of information originally on the license plate.
    (c) The fee for issuance or approval of license plates under
    this section is $15.

    Added by Acts 2003, 78th Leg., ch. 1320, § 6, eff. Sept. 1, 2003.

    Good luck.

Looks like they are white with black, instead of the gold and black.

That's incorrect. I run 54 year plates on my Chevy with no inspection sticker ever. I don't even bother to bolt the tab onto the plate either. I just carry it in my glove box in case I get pulled over.

Actually, 'Classic' requires annual safety inspection, 'Antique' does not... both can run YOM plates.

Moot point, anyhow, since RYAN is already registered 'Antique'... just FYI.

  11. I run my cars "antique status" with the year of manufacture plates. The DMV says If Im "antique" than I am only supposed to use the cars in "parades" or "car related events" and not to use them for everyday transportation. I do it anyways and the local gestapo here could give a shit about it.

Jesse is Jesse Perez 210 532 7456. 2214 St Anthony, San Antonio 78210.

Ryan wish I knew you needed these, I talked to Jesse several times @ Rosanky this weekend, could have picked you up a set. My buddy bought a set of 34 plates from him. Very reasonably priced.

I tried to register the 39 plates and the lady says, "You have to paint them reflective paint". I said,"lady, I just spent $150 on these plates, I'm not painting them ugly reflective paint."

I just found out the other day that the State of Oklahoma will allow vintage plates also.

Our only other options are the standard OK plate or a personal tag.

I am looking for a 1941 Oklahoma tag if anyone has one.

    Thanks,

    RASHY

    Just an FYI,
I have been running my truck with 53 plates registered as an antique with no inspection sticker and no plate in the front for almost 2 years with no problems from the fuzz.

When I bought Fatlucky's old ride he had '54 plates with the antique tag.The DPS office said that the tag was still good. They never even looked at the car or my ins. card. The tag is so faded I have no idea what the #'s are. I have been to San Antonio,Waco and all over Austin and Bastrop. The only time I have been pulled over was by DPS for no license plate light. When I told him what make and year it was he said "Oh, They didnt have license plate lights back then did they?". No officer they didnt?!?! He let me go with a warning about driving at night. I now have a light. When they are that old they really have no idea what is legal and what is not. Most don't really want the headache of doing the paper work. If you are not doing stupid things right in front of them they just smile and nod.

Picked up a pair of 31 plates at Rosanky from this Jessie guy. Nice, original pair needs ony a little paint. $20. I think Damnit Dave was a little upset.

I have bought a couple of cars out of Texas.

The plates went with the car.
Is that the same for the Antique, YOM, or Classic plates?

YOM plates are 'Year of Manufacture'... not the same as 'last year registered'. If you wanna run 'Antique' or 'Classic' in Texas for a 1957 Henway (for example), you can either show up with a good-looking set of original 1957 Texas plates, or you can run the new state-issued ugly sumbitches.

    Make sense yet?

Check ebay for plates, not just on the motors section you can still get alot of years dirt cheap. I had to repaint mine and fix some holes for them to register them. You still have the off chance someone already is running those #'s and you bought them for nothing.

My understanding is that Texas never repeated numbers on plates... hence, you need the matched set to register them. If you have the set, you own those numbers.
