From the code: "If the department approves license plates under this subsection , the department shall issue a symbol for attachment to one of the license plates, as determined by the department, showing the year in which the vehicle was registered under this section. " I noticed a lot of cars with YOM TEXAS plates and small little metal tags stamped with current dates attached to one of the bolts. Can anybody elaborate for me what these are? I registered my '58 antique, and dads '30 antique bothe with YOW plates and neither of us got these little tags. He's Harris County (Houston), and I'm Ft. Bend (SW Houston Suburbs) if that matters.
Years ago I had a Firebird Formula 350 which got wrecked by a girl. I got it repainted with a new urethane front bumper. Before I could mount the front plate properly, I had it on the dash. I got stopped for it because the cop didn't notice it. He said,"No problem with the plate, I'll just run your license and let you go." Uh-oh...
I got a set of plates (YOM) from a guy I believe named Jesse. He was (is?) a regular at some of the Houston area swap meets. He told me that some of the year plates for particular years were not made and excess plates were issued along with the little add on tag for some of these years. I am getting ready to register (try) my truck 36 Chev with these plates. These plates are labeled as "farm" plates. Has anyone else tried to use these different type of plates? Thanks BR
As long as you have both they are supposed to work. They no longer differentiate between the car plates, truck plates or other. So you can run plates that say "truck" on your car. Odd yes, but sweet none the less.
If any of y'all are having a tough time finding old plates to re-register, try this fella out. I've seen him at swap meets up here for a few years now: Old Texas License Plates Jesse Perez 210-532-7456 I hope this info is current, I got his card a year or two back. Oh, and if any of y'all need to reference anything else in the motor vehicle code in Texas, here it is: http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/tntoc.html
I guess I'll start a new thread to answer this question but here we go again. Can anyone elaborate or tell their experieces with the highlighed section below? My experiece with Harris, and Ft. Bend county is they do not issue these little tags. But I've noticed a lot of North Texas guys with them. "§ 504.501. CL***IC MOTOR VEHICLES. (a) The department shall issue specialty license plates[0] for a motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old. The license plates[0] must include the words "Cl***ic Auto," "Cl***ic Motorcycle," or "Cl***ic Truck" or a similar designation, as appropriate. (b) A person eligible for the license plates[0] may instead use license plates[0] that were issued by this state in the same year[0] as the model year[0] of the vehicle and are approved by the department. The department may require the attachment of a registration insignia to the license plate[0] in a manner that does not affect the display of information originally on the license plate[0]. (c) The fee for issuance or approval of license plates[0] under this section is $15. Added by Acts 2003, 78th Leg., ch. 1320, § 6, eff. Sept. 1, 2003. "
