ive got a neighbor that drives trains he told me a long story the other day about a place near New Braunfels, TX where back in the day ford had a huge train loaded with Model As on it and derailed around New Braunfels dumping a crap load of cars all up and down each side of the track..ford send the employees in to take off the hard parts such as axles, motors, and whatnot hardware and leave all the sheetmetal stuff there so they could reuse the good parts...now my neighbor tells me that still to this day for a good while on each side of the track when he passes through theres old cars just laying everywhere that were never cleaned up...after hearing this i shared the story with a buddy who had his boss over with him that night..the boss overheard and said''oh yeah! i did some work an a railroad a few years ago and saw all of that too!''...so im pretty convince after these guys had matching stories that these cars are still out there...does anyone else know about these or have any of you heard this story before?...

Tell me where! I live about 100 feet from the tracks that run into New Braunfels, and I'm only a few miles north of NB.

Wonder if that train track goes through or around or near the Kurtz brother's yards in Schulenberg?

But does it have a big chrome smoke stack coming out of the bed puffing black soot? Mine does, haha.

I know of no such pile of cars. I've scoured alot of the local area in search of barn finds and field cars. I work in New Braunfels, and usually cruise around during my lunch break out in the country. There's a handful of tracks running all over New Braunfels so it's hard to imagine where this could be. Go ask you neighbor for some more details on where this is, or what area to look and I'll go check it out. I've got nothing better to do.

I don't know about any other places than Cookies near New Braunfels and Johns near Seguin that have lots of old cars. But neither of them are anywhere near any tracks. A quick google map of NB shows only 2 sets of tracks running North/South through New Braunfels. I'm about 6 miles north in Hunter, damn near on the tracks. Matter of fact, a train is rumbling by as I type this. Try to get some more info, or I might stop one of the railroad guys that I see at the railyard a couple miles north of me and ask them if you're full of shit or not. haha

I would like to know where that is too. I live in New braunfels and have never heard or seen any like that. I would like to know where it is myself. With my business I am traveling around the area and am always on the look for old cars.

  16. Everything rusts so fast around here, don't see how anything could be left. Maybe just brown flakes on the ground.

New Braunfels es mi barrio and I've never heard anything about this.

Probably one of those urban myths...by the way, the river is really low this year, all you tourists should probably float somewhere else this summer.

  18. That story is an urban myth. I've read it here in another version where a train derailed in a lake with a load of 32's. Someone hears a story some old guy said this or that and embellishes on it and everyone wants to get in on the act. Happy Hunting!

I used to have a friend who was a conductor on a train for a while and I asked him onetime if he knew of any stashes of old cars near the RR tracks and he told me of seeing a large group of old cars on a property near lake Mcqueeney. He said that the property was very overgrown and that he could only see them in the wintertime.
I remember looking on Google for the place and never did find it on the maps.

I know exactly where they are and they are impossible to get out, unless you have a skyhook with a 1/4 mile of Shore Line. They are just South of my Thorkle Rod factory that is located east of Propwash and next to the burnt down Muffler Bearing shop. If you follow state Highway OU812 turn left at the big mud puddle just past where K mart used to be, you'll see a broke dick dog with 3 legs, he will chase you for a quarter mile if you go 20 miles an hour the Minute he stops chasing you then make an immediate right and travel to GPS location 29.802609-98.029167

OK, I know where that place is. It's off 725 near Blake's Cafe...but the last time I was by there he didn't have that many cars and they weren't in very good shape.

How many Hambers we got in New Braunfels?

I'm just trying to ensure all the Houston turistas enjoy their summer vacation, Bob...hate for you to drive all this way and be disappointed bumping your ass off the river bottom...I bet you can get some bargains in Crystal Beach and you won't have to put up with unfriendly locals.;)

We chased this one down a couple years back.
No idea how real it ever was, but you know how that goes. It was a fun adventure none the less.

I heard it from 2 sources as well, railroad and rail tressle over river. Then the sealing factor was that they built the road to the location to do the salvage.
Only place we figured out by maps of the rails around that area is a couple roads off 482 (parallels I-35) that crossed Dry Comal Creek. The most promising was the 1st right after Krueger Canyon when you're southbound on 482.

Sorry I couldnt remember all the details had to pull up Google Earth.
    lat=29.6650244447, lon=-98.2059094595

Needless to say we didnt find anything but then again we didnt hoof it on foot to the northeast across the tressle either. Or we could have totally got the wrong place but from the tales this was the only location that seemed to fit.

Ah the fun of being younger and not married with kids. Just a couple buddies some cold beverages and a mission!

Urban legend! I've worked on the Railroad for 30 years and have heard a similar story, only with Harley's instead of Model A's.

Sorry, this is off the subject a little, but car rail transports reminds me of something my buddy used to do back in the sixties. Sometime in the 1970s, new car transport rail cars became totally enclosed. That was in case of a de-railing but it was it was mainly because thieves were stealing parts off new cars. I have a friend that admitted that he used to sit along the tracks north of Fort Worth and wait for a train loaded with new GM cars from the Arlington Texas Assembly Plant to slow down or stop. When they stopped for switching or some other reason, he would run and climb aboard a new car rail transport and steal transmissions and tires. He told me that a few times he did not finish removing a transmission until after the train car started moving again. If he was not finished stealing the transmission when the rail car started moving, he would continue until he has the transmission was out of the car , then he would push it off the moving car onto the railroad track ballast and jump after it with his bag of tools. He rode one train slowly traveling about ten miles stealing a new transmission and new tires.

Years ago, I went to Hot Rod Exchange in Dallas a couple of times looking for good 4-speed transmissions. The owner told me that he did not have any at the moment but he expects to have a couple of new Muncie 4-speed transmissions in a few days from tjhe "Rock Island Express" . I did not care where the tranny came from as long as he gave me a receipt. I picked up a new 1970 M22 Muncie 4-speed transmission out of a 1970 Corvette from Hot Rod Exchange for $150.

"Hot" Rod Exchange meant just that...HOT.
