If your in Houston or south Texas then I could see that its more of problem. If you concerned with rust and bare metal I've heard and read that Gibbs works great. http://www.roadsters.com/gibbs/
I live hear you and I've had a bare metal fender in the garage for a month now and no rust on it whatsoever. The cast iron we get blasted at work will rust in minutes, but after baking and shot blasting I think it would rust just about anywhere. On most stuff, I haven't had any problems.
Don't car what you say, it can't be worse than Florida....It's a constant battle for me IF I don't use Gibs....Heck before I airconditioned the garage the peice I was working on flash rusted before I even went in for the night.... Good stuff.....get it
I just wouldn't recommend leaving any metal bare for long anywhere. My old '55 flash rusted bigtime after a while. I would primer as i go.
Here is a picture of my zoomy at 8AM left out overnight. The pic in my avatar was 5PM the previous day.
If left outside, rust happens over night. But I've got bare metal that's been in the shop for 2 years and it's only got rust spots where my hands have touched it.
the gulf moisture will rust anything if you live around 200 miles or less inland, didn't really have the problem when I lived in North Texas, keep it primered, I never leave metal bare over night, especially when doing body work
What do you have to do to paint over a car thats been rubbed with gibbs,i have heard you can paint over it,i find that real hard to believe,i would like to keep my car in bare metal but dont want a major pain in the ass when ready for paint???
A buddy of mine is a painter and didn't believe that you could paint over it. He did two test panels, both sprayed with Gibbs. One he thorougly cleaned the panel, and the other he just wiped the panel with a paper towel. Both panels were fine, no fish eyes or other "funky" shit. Made a believer out of him.
"Where in the hell is Saginaw TX?" Didn't I see that on a T-shirt a few years back, or is there one made for every little bitty town in the State?
Freshly blasted metal will rust quicker than metal that has been shined up with a wire wheel or a scotch brite pad. I guess it has to do with porosity. Same thing with cast iron or any metal that is pitted. You will notice that rust will start up in the pits of freshly blasted steel over a period of time, especially if it's humid like Tejas. When I finish working with a bare metal panel, I make sure it's decently shiny with a triple xxx scotch-brite pad and pre-cleano, then I wipe it down with pre-cleano or whatever pre-paint prep you like, again. This removes the acids that your hands leave and will help flash rust from occuring as quickly. As mentioned, Gibbs is a more long term solution and it really WORKS. The stuff is bitchin, but you have to keep on top of it, because rust never sleeps!! Haha!!
Do not use WD40 on anything you hope to paint! Bare metal will flash rust as you watch here....This is not an exaggeration. Use Gibs or cover with a light coat of spray-can primer and strip it each time you work...it's a bitch.
