You need to quit talking to who ever your talking to. I do a lot of ***le work. I use to use a ***le co., but now just do everything myself. Just did a bonded ***le last month. Nothing to it. There is a little paperwork involved though. To make it more interesting it was on a car that has never, ever, been registered..anywere. It still had a MSO (Manufacters State of Origin) from Ford. A boned ***le will alow you to get a ***le if you do not have one, in or outta state car. Texas goes back to the early 70"s for their records. Its on micro fish! So if it has ever been registed since the early 70's you can get info on the car. All cars older than 25 yrs are not subject to the "value". You can use a dealer appraisal on anything, 2010 model if you needed. It helps to be friendly with the girl behind the desk, cause they can make it hard on you if they want. I had a Motor Home ***led the other day, and they ***led it the wrong year, and a camper trailer!!! Took my county's tax office supervisior and the Waco supervisor to get it corrected. But still not a big deal, just interesting
I'm thinking the problem might be that all the data is on those " micro fish" and, even in Texas, they're pretty small and swim too fast. They'd be better off shrinking the records and putting them onto film. Then they could still call it "microfiche" but at least you could read them.
Have a friend that went thru a ***le co and and paid a stupid amount on taxes but I never have had a problem. I just go in and act as dumb as I can. I was going to get the same year tags for my 32 and took in some 1948 tags with the 32 as the number on it . The lady at the desk p***ed them and took my money but when she went to get the sticker the other lady caught it !
If it were me o.k..... I'm just saying I would back up and regroup take my paper work to the county seat dmv, say as little as possible and get another answer, because so far this sounds screwy and different people sometimes have different ways of doing business, and insane 1 has the best advice on here so far.
Seems that, at least in this state, 'we' are better off by going to a small community dmv office. Folks in the small offices just seem to have better at***udes since they can't hide from their neighbours..... .
Yeah that is true, it is much easier to get it done in the small towns, but when you're tryign to ***le somethign and pay taxes to Dallas county.. there aren't any small ones.
Does that mean that in Texas you must register the car in/through the county where you live? So, one county can't trust the tax collector in the next one......good system. Hopefully, the rest of what Texas has to offer will offset the local dmv. .
I turn the ***hole switch off and it usually helps. Hello are you having a good day? Blah blah I am sorry you will be able to go home soon. Blah blah I did not know that. Blah blah Can you help me with that please? Blah blah Thank you for your help I really appreciate that. Blah Blah You have a great day thanks for your help. If this doesn't work I call them Nazis and stomp out!!!! lol
Try this. Go in and act really dumb (you have to do this so they will appear smart) and tell them that you heard that you can get some kind of bonded ***le for a cool old car that you bought that is just like the one your grandma had and how you loved your grandma and the car makes you think of her every time you look at it. Everytime the clerk tells you what you need to do tell her how smart she must be and how much she knows about how to do her job. Get her on your side from the getgo. Just dont ham it up to much or she will catch on. They deal with ***holes like us all day long and probably would enjoy a few minutes of pleasant conversation. When I was getting my bonded ***le, on the third trip I finally got a nice lady and was told I didnt have enough digits on the the motor number I made up. (motor was long gone before I bought the car) They have a list showing the number of letters and numbers that each year should have. I told her that we must have not s****ed enough grease off of the block to see the whole number and I would go check it again. She told me to just get her attention when I got back and I could byp*** the thirty some odd people waiting in line with a number in their hands. Went and got a burger, added the missing digits, went back and finished the deal. Hey if I wasnt happily married I think I would have asked her for a date!
I just registered my 28 RPU last week and it was a little hecktic putting all of the paperwork together but all in all no big snags, and cheap too. I had the original ***le that had gone out of date in 1951, and a bill of sale for $1,800. I got insurance, got it white slipped (that is an inspection for out of state vehicles, cost $15) went back to the court house and filled out some paperwork with the donor motor info and an affidavit that I was the re-builder. I had to pay a penalty because the bill of sale was from a couple of years ago ( they want to charge you a fee for every 20 days you own it but dont register it) and gave the gal $192. Then I left with my plates.
