Ok guys so I bought a '51 Chevy Styleline and I'm ready to get the Texas title transferred here in Texas so I was wondering a couple things. First is how are they doing the taxes now, is it still by purchased price or are they doing a book value for that old of a car? Second, I'm getting an antique plate so do I still need to do a one time inspection or is it exempt. Do I need to go to DPS or can I just go to an inspection shop and have it done?
tx.gov , has a lot of info on YOM plates, antique, classic , etc. I'd take actual receipts as they will try to estimate if there's no BB value.
I was told they had a minimum. If you payed $500 it's $1400. If you payed a $1000 it's $1400. Goes up from there. If it's outa state you'll need a green sheet from inspection station. Hope you find one who knows what a green sheet is. Let us know how much you enjoyed the trip to see the folks at the DMV/Tax office. I made a mistake on the 1400 should be 4000
Not long ago I had mine done in Travis County and they slapped a $4,000 value on it. 49 Ford Coupe. Cost me around 500 bucks total. There is a multi-stage requirement at least in Travis County so just Google the DMV requirements and your counties requirements it's very confusing but doable
Oh I just remembered the inspection was nothing the guy checked for headlights tail lights brake lights license plate lights didn't even check the brakes unless my inspector was a dip you shouldn't have any problem with inspection. Antique license come with restrictions study those requirements. custom license plates are way expensive. I just opted for regular plates.
If your motor vehicle is 25 years or older you can register it as an Antique Vehicle. The license plate fee is small, less than 50 bucks. The plates are issued for a 5-year period, but they all expire at the same time. The current issue expires in March 2018. Fee is prorated if you have less than 5-years. Driving is restricted to non-business and not to be for regular daily transportation. Also, there is no safety or emissions inspections. It's a good deal. JWL
If you register it as an antique you do not need to do anything except go to your county tax office and pay the fees. If you want to register it as a classic or as a daily driver you will need to get it inspected
What those two said ^^^^^....the five year plate is the way to go.....no inspection -just in case it's down and not being driven the code patrol can't call it junk....good for five years....currently runs out in 2018 - I have them on my old motor scooters too !
Maybe things have changed, but I took my title and YOM plates to a title/license place that does the work for you and I told them it was a pile of parts but that I was going to have it put together in a couple months. I think I paid in the neighborhood of $400 all in. That was back in 2013. Auto Titles Plus Notary 1900 Blalock Rd # E, Houston, TX 77080
Sounds correct to go to a title service , they have experience and a little more authority when they go to dps....I've used a good one off of 249 east of fm1960. , cant think of the name..if you requiremitmi can look it up....
