Text Limitations for Dial-Up Users question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by C9, Dec 12, 2005.

  1. I've been having some problems with posting more than a few lines of text or posting virtually any photo.

It only happens here on the HAMB and other sites work fine.

Have any other dial-up users experienced this problem?

Ryan's gone above and beyond the call of duty in helping me out, but it's still a problem.

Dial up here also, even worse, mines AOL. It really makes a difference what speed I get connected at. Most of the time I get a 46**x speed, anything less then 33**x I reconnect, and 33 is pretty slow. I can now get DSL in my area, for $29 a month. I think thats whats going to happen shortly.

Dial up ****s. AOL ****s. But either is better than whats on TV.

Jay, what has changed lately? Have you gotten a new router or something? Just trying to throw ideas your way.

test photo post, appropriate for finding computer bugs

(that worked fine, now I know why we spend $50 a month for wireless broadband after all those years of dial up torture)

  8. No changes here.

The part that throws me is that other sites accept things just fine.

It may be something as simple as running up against the crowd since the HAMB's gotten so popular.
    10,000 + members, who'da thunk it?

And maybe it's time to look into DSL and other options.
Kinda hate to do that, with the phone line and Internet fees the bill is touching on a little over $50. per month.

Much more and I'll be getting into the roadster fund....

  9. What's requred as far as the communication link goes for DSL or broadband etc.?

for the wireless broadband we have, they stick an antenna on the roof, run a cable inside to a small power module, and then to a network router, which is connected to the computer (in our case to another network hub and a bunch of computers).

for cable it's a box that connects to the cable, then to the computer (or a router if you want to connect it to more than one computer).

for DSL, I think it's similar, the modem connects to the phone line and then to either your one computer or to a router you'd probably have to provide.

Unless you get a DSL modem card for in the computer, then it just connects to the phone line, but you might be limited to one computer?

and for most of these setups you'd need a network interface card in the computer, most modern computers have this built in.

Go broadband, very easy. They bring a cable into your home and hook up a modem, then your computer. One fee, usually around $45 per month. You should be able to get a 6 month or one year discount for about $19.99 per month for the discount period. No second phone line needed. Once you go high speed you'll kick yourself in the **** because you didn't do it sooner.;)

DSL usually runs on the same line as the regular phone, only one line needed.

Yesterday around the time you posted this I couldn't get a page to of the HAMB to even start to load on my screen to read, much less add a reply.
    Other sites came up immediately.
Ten minutes later it worked ok.
    I think it's traffic jamb?

I have dial up, 49,333 bps right now, sometimes 48,000 bps. Any lower than that I redial it till it's better.
If it's windy and raining forget it, I'll settle for a 23,000 bps because that's all they send out.
    I have Earthlink, I'd change but I don't want a new Email addy...besides, I fear change...it's seldom good.

In the case of broadband or dsl, usually the change is good. Although we did have good (but slow) dialup service from earthlink, and being able to dial up when on the road is nice.

The good thing about a new email addy is that it doesn't get spam, for a while at least.

I haven't designed a site for dial up in years. And all of my sites are pretty heavy graphically cuz I like pretty things.

As far as the Atomic Servers, we have been lagging a bit for the past week or so, so I took the time to rebuild the databases and recompile everything yesterday afternoon. Since that time, we have been running at peek. Traffic isn't hurting us too bad really...

I want ya to get broadband. I know the bill is scary, but it is worth every penny... Will make your time on the internet so much more efficient.

My internet connection runs between 28.8k and 36.0k. I also have Earthlink, I usually dont run into to many problems opening posts except that it takes a minute or two. But a post with a lot of pics mostly will not load at all, and I get disconnected. I call the Sprint every week wondering when they are going to have DSL in my area, hell I would even settle for satalite right now if it were availible in my area. DSL or broadband is the way to go. I used to have a T-1 line when I lived in CA, the internet would load as fast as your computer would process the info on the page.

I got Yahoo DSL over a year ago and the installation was easy. You don't need an extra phone line. If you have a fairly new computer, you just plug in the modem they send you. plug in a couple of filters on your regular phones. It started right up the first time.

Total phone bill has been running about $50 (that's your regular phone bill and the dsl connection).

I have had DSL for about 5 years....I find that it is getting slower, probably because everybody and their brother is using it now. They say it shouldn't slow down with more people like cable, but it seems like it has to me.

My only problem Here with dialup (other than the Usual slooow loading of pictures) is that if I want to send a long message or post I have to open a window and run the HAMB there changing to different posts or I will get bumped off.
I guess I type too slow.
