So, I got a call from dad today and for some reason, he decided to pull his transmission out of the 36. He decided he needed to change the bushing in the front of the transmission to fix a leak. He called out of frustration, because now it seems that the convertor won't drop in far enough to gain clearance between the flex plate. I went over and I could get the convertor to drop in and it seems to engage the pump. I measure from the front nose if the convertor to the front face of the case, using a machinists straight edge. I came up with .565". He said that if he tried to install the ****** with that gap, it binds up against the flex plate, making it unable to rotate. My dad swears he put this back together correctly, but I have to wonder if the pump can accidentally be installed possibly backwards? He said that there were markings on the pump and he faced them forward. What else would limit travel on the convertor. I stood the ****** on it's tail and spun the convertor until it dropped in, like you would expect. Like I said, I don't know why he thought this thing needed a front bushing. The ****** may have 10K miles on it total. I think a front seal would have fixed his problems, but at 82, if it makes him happy, who am I to judge?
Sounds like the torque converter just didn’t go into the last little bit. I have had some that seem like I had to spin and push in way too many times to get it to go.
I agree with Guthrie..have Dad spin the torque converter around several times, while pushing it back towards the ******...it should fall into the slot and give him the room he needs.
It’s been a long time... but it seems to me the pump gear can be installed upside down. The internal gear flats that engage the torque converter do not run the entire length of the gear... only half way. This happened to me once... pretty sure it was a TH... May have been an AOD tho...?
I am pretty sure the pump is bottomed out. I spun it and messed with it for an hour, taking measurements as I went. I bet the pump is flipped as well.
Yep pump gear probably backwards. Also, did he align the pump with a large hose clamp or band? I always put both gears back in the same direction due to wear. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Welp, he pulled it all back apart and flipped the pump over, problem solved. Just wanted to update everyone.
Thanks for the update, and confirmation of the problem to help future questions. Sent from dumb operator on a smart phone
