I'd like to convert my 40 ford pickup from a TH350 behind the SBC to 4 or 5 speed manual. It's currently setup with what I think is a Speedway trans mount / split bone kit.

What I'm trying to find out is are there any chevy manual trans set-ups that share the same mount postion, output spline count and length of the TH350 as in a direct swap out ignoring clutch set-up?

I'm no expert, but I think what you'd want to look for is a saginaw 4 speed, or a light duty muncie 4 speed, M20 or M21.

    yeah, a saginaw 3 or 4 speed, a Muncie except the M22, a T10 but not a Super T10, etc.

watch the shifter, make sure there is room for it

As long as you don't have a long tailshaft version of the TH350, all the manual trannies mentioned above will fit with the same driveshaft. If you get an M22 or Super T-10, I think (please confirm this with someone who knows better than I do!) that you will only need to change the front yoke on the driveshaft.

There is also a version of the Tremec 5-speed that is basically a direct replacement for a Muncie... but it will move the shifter location. You'll want a pretty deep rear gear for these, though. (3.70 or numerically higher is recommended.)

About a year ago, I swapped out my long tail TH350 for a Muncie... and it bolted right to the ****** crossmember in the same place with the same mount. I did get a longer driveshaft, tho.

I know that a WC t-5 is the same length as a long tail 350 th.

Just changed over to a t-5 in my 65 'burban.

    Thanks people,

Watching a Saginaw 4 speed at the moment and while I'm waiting on info from the seller on ratio's I'll check I've got a short TH350 which I'm sure I have and also have a look at where the shifter would land also so.

  8. You can switch to an S10 5 speed NWC, it will be within a 1/4" of bolting to your th350 SHORTtailshaft mount location[:D die grinder]...
Then it's shifter is on top and solves that problem plus a cruise gear that is better.
It will require shortening your driveshaft about 2-1/2" due to a longer overall case length.. there are a couple simple mods [at input shaft] mentioned here on HAMB if you do a search on that....
