TH350 too much engine braking in D

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 4t64rd, Mar 12, 2009.

  1. Just put a TH350 (non lock up convertor) back in service in my '46 after it sat for about 8 years, I thought everything was working fine (shifts smooth, all 3 gears, no leaks), but yesterday I noticed that there was a little too much engine braking when I let off the gas... I know there is a band in the trans for engine braking when in 2nd, and I know how that feels, but this is just a slight drag on the engine...

What do you think is causing it?

Id did a seach and didn't find anything with " TH350 engine braking" of or "th350 coast"

  2. Did you switch to an engine with more compression, and that's what you're feeling?

  3. Nope, but the engine probably has more vacuum than it did a few days ago (tune up), before I noticed the problem.

    Modulator?

Could it be that you're used to a 4 spd trans now and the 350 just feels different? I know that when I got my 60 Impala with a powerglide, it drove me insane, because I kept waiting for it to shift into 3rd. It had been so long since I had a "glide" that I just wasn't used to it.

  5. It's not in the upshifts, it's when you let off the throttle, it seems to drag on the engine more than it should, or did last week.

Maybe the band is ****ed or dragging somehow?? The servo could be stuck also causing a little extra drag. The only other things that could cause that symtom will get expensive here shortly......like something else in the rotating ***embly improperly clearanced or binding.

I gotta remember to read what I've written. LOL I had intended to further state that when I let off the gas, it slowed quicker than an overdrive type transmission also. I finally got irritated enough to replace the Glide with a 350.

  8. You remembered to disengage the parking brake, right?

  9. Yeah, that'll give you that draggy feeling.

Also if your tires have only 10 or 15 pounds of air in them, that'll give you that draggy feeling too even though they might not look all that flat at first glance.

You can make a song about it. "I've got that DRAGGING FEELING, I've got that DRAGGING FEELING, I've got that DRAGGING FEELING, and it ****s ****s ****s, whoa whoa whoa." :D

You might jack all four wheels off the ground and see if one of your brakes is dragging.

  10. Never thought of the brakes dragging, there's a thought... No parking brakes as of yet... FL is as flat as a pancake for the most part... saving up for the cables.
