TH400 help needed

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by birds4ever, Apr 1, 2013.

  1. I have a caddy 500 with th400 trans with long tail shaft. I’m asking for help understanding what yoke to use.
A friend gave me one that is 6 inches long and goes in 2.75 inches before hitting seal. I’m ok with how far it goes in, but not comfortable with all the excess sticking out before the first u-joint. Maybe I shouldn’t be concerned, but I am.
Are there other lengths of th400 yokes? Early models vs. later?
Would appreciate any suggestions. IF I do need a shorter one, does anyone have one for sale?
    Thanks for the help!

There are different lengths depending on application..got any pics?. Corvette is probably the shortest of all. It goes in 2.75 inches before hitting the tailshaft seal? On a long tailshaft it should go all the way in to the actual yoke.

  3. After laying around in a shop for many years, the trans may of had some dirt and junk stopping the yoke from going all the way in.

Willys1, thanks for the reply. I thought 'what the heck', as long as it needed rebuilt anyway, I jammed it in and it went all the way to the wear marks on the yoke before stopping. All is good now. I can at least get measurements for the driveshaft now.
