I have seen them with alignments much the same as this in factory-stock setups. My machine work has always been to allow for a longer driveshaft, or driveshaft section. Since the yoke is fixed, the slip splines need to be in the driveshaft, and they need enough room to move.

My current project has a fixed yoke, and calls for a 21" slip-spline driveshaft. Every little counted there.

As long as the splines on the output shaft are completely covered by yoke splines, and you use the proper grade bolt, along with the correct diameter and thickness of retaining washer, I think you should be good.

  2. Have you checked to make sure that TH475 will bolt to your Cadillac ?
I ask because I've never seen one in a motorhouse behind anything but Big Block Chevys .

    $40.00 adapter.

Chevrolet engines and BOPC engines have the same lower two bottom bolt holes, and the dowel pins are in the same location too. That makes producing a simple adapter cheap and easy.

Also, I guess you have not seen a GMC motorhome powered by an Oldsmobile 403, or 455, coupled to a TH425 front wheel drive transaxle, driving the front wheels.

Or, for that matter, an Ultra Van, which was a Chevrolet Corvair powered motorhome.

  5. On the subject of adapters, there are a couple different ones.
One set up has a spacer for the crank/converter hub pilot.

I have used the cheap one you posted. The one with the hub/crank spacer is made from thicker material and I may go with it.
Looks like the only other mod to use the 475 would be drilling the 3 extra converter bolt holes.

  6. Yep I've seen the front wheel drive ones you mentioned And the Corvairs.. .. in fact My neighbor was the Prez of the local Corvair club.
I just pictured having that 475 all ready to bolt up.. THEN realizing it didn't match the Cadillac pattern..
Me Not remembering that there were simple adapters out to to do just that
    Carry on....

Just a quick question about TH475s:
Would it be worthwhile to look for a TH475 to use in a drag car? Seems like the straight cut gears would make a bullet proof deal. But, I have never broken a TH400. Do I need more horsepower?

  9. From what I read it’s a no unless we are talking crazy HP.

A conventional TH400 can be built to handle 2000hp.

If that is not enough, a TH475 should be able to handle more.

  11. I’m only thinking about using the 475 because I fell into one. The GVW of the ride it’s going in and because I can use the th400 in another project.
    It’s a win win situation
