Got a question for you guys, I remember a topic about using diesel oil instead of normal modern car stuff, because of the cleansers in the diesel stuff. But I can't remember what I was supposed to use, trying to get a little done on the olds. Thanks guys! -peter
They were talking about using comercial grade motor oil such as Mobil Delvac 1630, 1640, and 1650, Chevron Delo or Mission Valley Petroleum Duron 40w Heavy Duty Engine Oil. the thinking is that they have less detergents than new conventional oil and offer higher levels of friction protection. This is because the natual additives used to protect against friction also cause resistence in the engine therby reducing gas millage. Also the comercial grade oils are closer to the formulas used back in the day and are closer to what the engines where originaly designed to run with. Ive been using the Shell and also Castrol truck oils since that thread. Cant really see any difference yet but just knowing what they contain gives me that warm feeling I see that Castrol now has a special grade of oil and ATF for "high mileage vehicles"; maybe they saw the need???
Big rigs today are all going over to synthetics for extended oil changes and fuel economy amongst other things. Synthetics remain pH. neutral much longer than regular oils, but then you have to have special filters too. I've found Delvac and Rotella to be top of the regular diesel oils though and have Rotella in my 'Shaker' right now, but if I was to change I'd go over to the synthetics, but they are not good to run in an older motor as they don't mix so well with traces of regular oil. Or so I'm told.
