Art & Inspiration That WWII Aero-Engine Look

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ned Ludd, Jan 4, 2023.

  1. Understand
The wires we did like this were custom made. Special shielded? Don’t know.
    The flatty ran great.

we also did one where the bellhousing and block were ground together.
That engine had “tins” crafted to skin the block. You couldn’t find the seams. They were fitted around the block and butted up to the timing cover, oil pan and head seams that the it looked like a perfectly smoothed block. A very talented metal guru built them at work. I was mesmerized watching this unfold.
No visible freeze plugs, no lumps or bumps.
even had a flush fit starter cover.
the heads were ground smooth and re shaped along the valve cover seal area.

Thanks, That was my question. Never seen a radiator painted anything other than flat black.

    Hey, Anthony;
    "aviation style hose clamp"
Nice. Another tool to aquire, build or buy.

Sorta feeling like the Joker in Batman; "Where *does* he get all those cool tools?".

    Thanks.
    Marcus...

  4. Nice clean look.
Never used em on my beaters but they looked cool on the customers ride.
I thought Alan’s brother did some sort of magic trick when he showed us how to do em. I haven’t done one since leaving. Actually almost forgot about it until this thread popped up.
I might just buy me that tool.

Funny that this pops up now, I'm in the same process.
    I went with a grey/aluminum theme though.

And yes - cable lacing/MilSpec harness, aviation style hose clamping with that T-shaped tool, safety wire on all bolts etc. is how I approach it.

This is far from what I want - just a first mockup and there is a ton of clutter I have to remove and tidy up, but you get the idea.

The thermodynamics of surfaces has been well understood since the age of steam. The aero-engine people would have been aware that the effect of colour on thermal emissivity increases with temperature, and that painting an aircraft engine black would make very little difference to its ability to radiate heat. They would also have known that surface texture has a far greater effect at the sorts of temperatures the outer surfaces of aircraft engines reach, and the fact that they didn't seem to mind a gloss black finish tells me they didn't think it made enough difference to worry about.

I suspect that the black aero engines might have come from engine-finish conventions within the companies who were developing aero engines, many of whom were oriented to a conservative, old-wealth automotive market in which a black-painted engine might have the same sort of impression of decorum as a black-suited butler. We saw that above with Rolls-Royce, Cadillac, and (for a few years) Lincoln, but at least Mercedes-Benz and Pierce-Arrow were at it as well:

Packard favoured green engines before WWII, but the aero engines they built were Rolls-Royce designs, down to the paint colour.

It looks neat and it doesn't protrude, but what I really like about it is that the clamp itself is simply a length of wire without anything proprietary about it. That would suit the kind of design/build ethic I'm after.

I built this little 325 Dodge Hemi a few years ago. Painted it black with Allen Head stainless fasteners from McMaster-Carr.

Thanks - and yeah, you just gave me a new idea for my next custom filter housing.

  18. I am going to run with the aircraft aesthetic too. Not black but, gold and maybe getting fasteners picked out polished with minimal shiney stuff elsewhere. My fuel parts are all fasteners which started me down this road.

Although a pain to keep clean, I always liked the wrinkle black on Street Hemi valve covers.

Pre-war gloss black was popular because it was the most durable enamel paint at the time. It uses carbon to get the colour which produces a very stable and fast curing paint. Heat dissipating black is a different composition
