Picked up a stuck 283 from the guy who who sold me the $75 283. Like the $75 283 this one also has Jeep parts attached to it. figured we have to see if we can get it unstuck and running.
A bit of sludge buildup but nothing spectacular. the plugs unscrewed fine and really don’t look all that bad either.
That is a really interesting Powerglide/Turboglide ? adapter plate on the back of the engine ........attached to a ???? bellhousing and then the Jeep trans adapter plate. Have you figured out what everything is ? Looked at your profile, is it going in one of your Willys ??
Nope just a power glide adapter to a ???? Bellhousing. No Jeep trans adapter plate needed. I have the exact same conversion setup from the rb 327 I posted about on here awhile back. The starter is held to the power glide adapter Only with two bolts. It’s all long shaft t90 truck stuff. And once I find a willys axle it’s all gong into a cj5
yea, another "this should be easy" project - in High School friend's Dad had 4 wheel drive Willy's Wagon with a SBC - could do a 4 wheel burn out - fun stuff
Helped a friend with his 327 Jeep CJ conversion back in early 80's. Flame cut a spacer/adapter for bellhousing to transmission, and used a Ridgid tubing cutter to shorten up the driveshaft. Think I stick welded the driveshaft to yoke once we took out the required length. Sorry to go off topic a bit.
So back to it. Went over and took the front pulley off and screwed the three bolts back into the harmonic balancer. Put a bar on the bolts and got it rolling over. Hooked the starter up and it spins over nice all the valves are free. I even freed up the 2jet
New found motivation I’m going back out to do a compression test to see if I should go any further. It wasn’t really what I would call stuck even. Just tight and with a small nudge pushed through pretty easy. I’m exited
Where would one connect a vacuum advance? Just anywhere on this manifold? And this port by the mixture screw? I’m guessing plug it? I just got a non crushed oil pan swapped on it. Looking for that cap and wires now.
Inspected and reinstalled. Got a fuel pump and line. Hunting around for a return spring. I have the cap and wires. The inlet bard for the 2jet was plugged. Took it out and the inside of the 2jet literally looks flawless. It might end up being usable. I need to hunt around the garage for the small things but I’m sure I have it all. I’m debating eating and getting back to it. I could maybe try to start it tonight.
picture found on eBay. On a Rochester 2jet that port with the brake line screwed into it? What is it?
Screwed all the plugs in it and figured out some small stuff this morning. Did that compression test 2468 are well above 120psi but 1357 were at 120 with 7 being at 70psi maybe those numbers will come up after I run it? Really hoping it’s just gummed up valves.
Soak the cylinders a LOT, keep turning over. Rings freezing up in the piston lands is a concern and can break a ring and ruin a cylinder wall.
All the plug gaps were all over the place a few over 60 thousands and one under 15 thousands none of the gaps made sense? Well I need to find that points resistor and pour oil in it. Drag the battery over and make a line to stick in a gas can. Maybe hear it run tomorrow?
Nice score. The smaller cube 260/283 parts may be a little more costly but it's still a SBC so all the same rules apply. Since the pump isnt pumping have you had any success if you dribble gas into the carburetor?
Great hot street engines that wind like all hell. Eight grand on the street is not uncommon. They sound like an F 5 tornado in second! Cool motor find. Here's a pic of the one I originally built for my Vicky, now in my buddies '34.
Well I put a fuel pump on it and it fired right up. I cannot believe that 2jet still works.. it runs well.
