Yep, he did it again. In defending the Cup, he set the bar at an all-new high for those of us who hope to have our name on the Yay-Hoo Cup one day. If you haven't heard yet, Jeff Yocum (FlamedAbone) won the 2010 Yay-Hoo Cup with a 10.98 @ 123.49.

Take a while to digest that. A 70 year old street car that he drove half way across the country that runs 10's! Did I mention that he does it on the tires he makes the trip with?

The end result doesn't tell the whole story though. Early on, we thought the door was wide open for somebody else to grab The Cup. Jeff's first pass was in the high 11's and there was a ton of smoke from his lane at the end of the track. Did he blow it up? Was there something wrong with the car that kept the pass slower than expected? Maybe this whole thing wasn't the forgone conclusion that most thought it was? Anything and everything can happen at a drag race. Turns out that the blown Pontiac had spit the dipstick out and pushed some oil onto the header, causing the smoke. By the next pass, Jeff was back in prime form.

At the end of the day, when all was said and done, Jeff and his A sedan were king of the mountain. His name will go on the Yay-Hoo Cup as the first two time winner. The Yay-Hoos made the traditional presentation in the parking lot Saturday night. We also presented him with a neat little timing tag to commemorate his win last year. Our own Clif Haggard (Firedome) made the tag from scratch in his mad scientist shed out back, and Ryan punched the lettering and numbers. We were pretty happy with the way it turned out, and Jeff seemed to really dig it as well. The presentation drew a small crowd of onlookers and picture takers to congratulate Jeff on his triumph. Soon though, people broke off into smaller conversations and went back to their "camp" for more beer. As I talked so some folks next to my coupe, I caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye. It was a man, his hot rod, and his trophy. He was just kinda chillin' and taking a moment to himself before he went back for another bud light beer can race. I imaging he was probably thinking of what he's going to do over the year to get a little quicker. Or maybe he was dreading the heat on the trip home.

Speaking of Jeff's trip home, I thought this would be a good time to put something else into a little perspective. The Yay-Hoos got home Sunday night and Jeff's times were already on the internet and pictures were all over the HAMB. I got up and went to work yesterday and ate dinner with my wife last night. There are a bunch of "thank you" and pictures threads that have run their course and are starting to die out. Jeff, on the other hand, is still on the road. He went further out of his way on his return to South Carolina to see his folks. He's out there on the open road still driving his bad m'fer 10-second Model A hot rod and he's a hero of ours.

Congrats Jeff!!!! Not only do you inspire everybody with those rad cars you churn out of your garage but you'll run down anybody that takes it to the strip over there at Mokan.

Let's here it for the South East and Jeff!!!!

So if you made him a Yay-Hoo, would he then be the " World's Fastest Yay-Hoo" ? Just wondering!!! Does DW still race?

  8. He even races in them boots! Jeff, you deserve the cold Shiner my friend.

    Hilarious Zman! :)

Jeff is the real deal for sure. He was so happy and excited after making his 10 second pass, it was an awesome sight. I personally cannot wait to see him in action next year.

Jeff - it was great hanging out. I'm so happy we attended and were able to share in the celebration of your victory.

    Cheers!

OK... Jeff is awesome... but we need to mention a few others who signed up to compete for The Cup:

SEASIDE - Dennis has been the first person to register for the Yay-Hoo Cup every year we've done this. As one of our most enthusiastic supporters, and since he hails from nearby Springfield, MO, Dennis actually drove his heap an extra 60 miles to ensure that he met the '... at least 150 miles' criteria to be eligible. Way to go, Dennis!!

EL POLACKO - Steve is gonna get that damn pickup hooked up one o' these days... then look out! I know he spent a good amount of time in the hotel parking lot chasing down a mystery 'clunk' in the rear differential Sat evening... :D

ZMAN - Scott stepped up to the plate, and between passes in his bitchin' Buick he hung out with us in the Hoo-ville tent. His Buick may have been considered a long shot by some, but he did it... and we dig that!

KERRY - an 'automatic' contender... one of the guys who inspired the concept of the Yay-Hoo Cup from the get-go. Kerry loads it with gear, drives it thousands of miles, and runs quicker than many who trailer theirs. Hero.

We also had a few others sign up who did not provide HAMB handles... way cool, guys.

Wow...thanks, guys. I SWEAR I am not near that goofy looking in person...

Thanks to all the Yay-Hoos, Ryan and company, and everyone at the track that works so hard sweating their butts off all day. I look forward to the Drags and the Cup all year long. I would do it all again next week..

The car just keeps purring like a little kitten and never lets me down....other than my family, she is my one true love. If she keeps loving me back, we will be there again next year to defend the crown.

Thanks again everyone for everything. See ya, -Abone.

  15. No Jeff, you really are! ;-) You're also a class act with a bitchin car. Congrats!!!

I only wish you guys had started the Yay-Hoo cup one year earlier so I could have had my name on it. The bar has been pushed way past where I can reach these days. BTW, I thought I had signed up each year as well.

KERRY - my bad... that's what I get for trying to use the notebook for notes instead of just thinking about who was automatically a contender for The Cup. Always. You're signed up before the event date is confirmed and couldn't get out of it if you tried... :D

    Updating the post now...

  19. Actually I signed the notebook, I'm just a sloppy writer and you probably couldn't read it. ;-)

    Yes, you are :)
The camera does NOT lie ... ;)

As a fellow resident of South Carolina ... I can tell you, Jeff does drive the Yay-Hoo Cup winner almost everyday. It is a regular sight on his hometown streets. In addition ... he works his butt off in the shop and turns out great projects quickly.

He makes me tired ... just thinking about how busy he stays and how hard he works.
