I stripped it right down to the block with the crank still in it. Overhauled it in the car. Got a book and read it carefully and asked a lot of questions to the machine shop that did the heads. Got it all back together with 3/4 race cam and 3 twos and it runs great. Lot of oil pressure now and lots of power.
So much power that my 39 Ford ****** is making even more noise under load.
Don't really know what to do with the rest of the drive train. The crossmenber is welded in so I would have to make it removeable to pull the ******, which I've been told involves pulling the Model A rear end because of the closed driveline.
Someone suggested going to a T-5 ****** and converting the A rearend to open driveline.
Or maybe a Muncie 4 speed and the same open driveline.
If I go to an open driveline what do I do with those two metal rod brace things that go from the rear end to the bell area on the rear of the 39 Ford ******?
Or should I just wrestle the 39 ****** out and get it fixed. Don't really know what way to go.
After I cleaned up my garage after the overhaul I was missing a deep well 3/4 socket. Couldn't find it anywhere and thought since the last thing I use it for was tighting down the heads I left it in the engine under the intake manifold. It drove me nuts, went over the work area with a fine tooth comb and no socket.
FINALLY found it in the trash, It got swept up with all the old lifters which were about the same size, shape and color.

your trans prob wont last too much longer behind that motor if its whining now. you need to pull rear end rearward in order to get ****** out. after that, its up to you- the sky is the limit.

You will have to do so serious transmission cross member work to use a 4 speed Muncie transmission and some modifications with the T-5 ******.

If you go this route the simplest way to do the rear axle is get a leaf spring kit from Ch***is Engineering, basically a bolt in deal. HRP

Those metal rod brace things are wishbones. If you go to an open rear end, you can get a parallel leaf spring kit and install it, and sell the wishbones.
