Curious about Dave scroggs car,do you have any info on body, chop etc.? Looking forward to watching this build.
It has been almost 6 months since I have posted any updates on this project. It has come a long way. I do not get on here much anymore and with the hamb app not working very well, It makes updates difficult. I have also changed jobs and now work at Dennis Carpenters restoration parts. so from now on, Ill try to keep up a little better. The project turned directions a hair. I decided I wasn't happy with running a flathead. So that idea hit the curb. I stumbled on a killer 292 y block ford. A friend had it and it was in excellent shape. A runner ready to go. But it still made its way to the engine shop. .80 over bore, a 505 isky cam, decked heads, Windsor valves. balanced, tri power setup with all new 94s. I scored a really cool set of early headers that needed a few repairs. Also with having the Chrysler adapted to the flathead, it was super easy to just switch it over to the Y block. I scored a crusty original 32 chassis. very rusty but it was super square, never wrecked or beat up. So I used that chassis to build my own frame jig. With some really cool old beams and channel from the early 1900s, I made a killer jig that is solid and works well! We got the chassis all fit up, welded, ground down... hours and hours of smoothing and fitting really paid off. I installed a vega box, a custom made x member to hold f1 pedals. Simple but effective. I used 36 rear radius rods, shortened them and added upper support bars. Using a t rear spring in a model A rear cross member, this car will sit perfectly! For the front, I used a super nice 32 heavy axle, 34 bones that were drilled for the suicide style suspension. The front and rear frame horns were bobbed, frame was notched for the springs to clear. I also switch from running 40 steel wheels to a nice wide 5 setup. 4 finned drums that were NOS that I swedged onto a set of center hubs. I used my buddies roadster body for mach up. Flop as been working on the body. It has been a little over a year since I ordered the new 3w body. I'm hoping to have it back in about a month. The car looks amazing with a the deck lid and the hood that I purchased. I have yet to get a louvered roof insert, but it is coming. I bought a nice set of guide 682-c for the car and some 37 ford rear lights. Lots to do yet, but it is coming.. Below is just a glimpse of the work that has been done. When the car is all finished, I am goin to start a new thread with nothing but build photos from day 1, to finished.. thanks guys appreciate the support!
finishing up the front suspension. I had it all bolted together for mach up. Turned out 2 bushings for my spring perches going in the wishbones . Some tig welding , and they will be ready to blast and prime. I also got all ford wheel bearings installed in the wide 5 drums, and spin check every wheel before the go off to powder coat . progress !! Sent from my SM-S920L using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Looking good! Couldn't ask for a better person to get your body put together! If you have issues with the ap try using the mobile site. I use an iPhone and find the mobile site much better than the ap.
Not much to report in about . finished up the front wishbones. they look great . I bolted the spring perches in. I still have to trim them short and drill them for a cotter pin. but I really like how rugged it looks . blasted some of the front end stuff. i installed New King pin bushings and reamed them. Everything is about ready for paint ! I set my baby 239 y block in just to mach up so more more things while my healthy 292 is still at the shop. Also picked up a 16 inch limeworks 40 ford wheel. just to give me a little more room inside... Gotta get rid of that God aweful yellow! . Sent from my SM-S920L using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
made some front brake line mounts. Since the frame is pinched , I needed much longer brakes hoses than stock. these were from napa and are 18.5" long. still a tad shorter than I wanted. but I wanted to run an off the shelf line instead of a custom made one. starting to get lines run and all the the mounting tabs for them put in place before we blast and paint the chassis . Spent some time tonight running brake lines. It is a little tricky to make them all removable so we can paint everything. I only have a few more things to do and the entire running gear will be ready for paint. I received all my steering joints today, along with some small odds and ends I was waiting on. My body has been delayed again. I'm starting to wonder if ill ever make Bonneville . I must have the body back to fit up the steering column, the gas tank, and the radiator. Not to mention making sure the body holes are in the correct locations . If I do not make Bonneville 2017, due to other scheduled / planned events, I will not be able to go until 2020.. The entire reason behind building this car, is driving it to Bonneville while we still can. Every year it seems the thought of racing on the salt fades further and further away with the condition of the salt flats, and the talk of them being shut down.. When we started this build, I made a very well planned out schedule. I know I can finish this car on time if I stick to the schedule. So far , I'm about a week ahead, but with the body not being done... it will put me months behind. Within a month this chassis will be sitting here, painted, assembled , with every inch being totally rebuilt or new , waiting for the body to be set on.. Really hoping to make some real progress soon.
Your spring perch approach is interesting. Did you do that to offset the spring behind the axel so you can drop the front more than if it was stock? I've never seen that before. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
in the early 50s, Doane Spencer designed this style suspension. Later on in life , many people have also used this. I first saw this style setup on the rolling bones car. Which is why I decided to figure out how to built it myself for my car. It allows the car to sit way lower than original . and still use the stock 32 ford axle . He did it this way clearly cause it's the coolest, look see Well that's why I did it anyway. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
was your 292 in an industrial application just wondering from the framework built around it. great build the attention to detail and fab makes me feel unworthy which is why I never post picture well that being computer illiterate Tom
update: Tom has got my body pretty well finished up. Still have to give it a 5-6 inch hair cut. but the main car looks like a 3w! finally its together. Very happy to see it. He is hoping to have it totally chopped and finished for after new years. I picked up the paint for the car today. Its a really sharp factory 32 color. Also I got my tri power totally redone. I found a really great paint that looks aluminum. But not the cheap chrome spray paint crap. So I got it painted and cleared. The carbs are all new, hand built, and tuned. I checked in on my engine guy. We are decking the block, more than just a clean up job. Gotta bump that compression up! more to come! heres a few photos
I sure like the direction you are going with this build...Now just chop the shit out of it and you will have a KILLER hot rod....
Thanks Dennis! it is absolutely everything I want in a hot rod. Its going to be killer. I chose a great color to. So once Mr. Flop finishes the chop, a local hotrodder who does some of the nicest paint work on the east coast, is going to spray everything on the car for me. I'm going with 32 ford old chester grey, with a nice set of black wide 5 wheels and drums, black chassis and I'm thinking about doing a very creamy white colored grill insert. I'm not sold on the grill yet, I just know I do not want it shiny stainless
Great choice! One of my favorites. I can't wait to see this color applied to your new floppy body. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Not much to post . I finally found some longer brake hoses that allow me hide the mounting tabs under the chassis. so I relocated the tabs for the front and fabbed up the rear mounts I needed as well. Also my f1 pedals were wore pretty bad, I had rebushed them but they still had play. So I made a new main pin. to my knowledge no one makes an f1 pin. . my tri power is finally complete with linkage and aircleaners. Now that the chassis is complete , it's time to blow it all apart for paint. . When doing this, I found my t spring was cracked. bummer! this was such a nice spring. But a new one is on the way and currently it's torn down to nothing for paint and powdercoat. My engine guy has dropped the ball, As of right now there still is no progress on it. Also I haven't herd much on the body. we will see how the new year turns out... On a better note, earlier this month, I was asked to join the Iron Lords cc... This was huge honor for me. I have always looked up to this crew of hot rod and custom guys. And as of December 9th, they are my family .. thank you guys . here is a few photos ..... CONGRATS! How cool is that?????? Great bunch of guys.....I keep forgetting to tell ya I really like the chin guard with the V8 on it....
Could have got an even better bounce off the tree lights if Jerm was in the back row..... Congrats on joining a great group of traditional hot rodders. vic
I really like your barn!! It is cool that you are building a Rolling Bones inspired hot rod in a Barn just like Ken and Keith do
