Customs The '41 Merc chop......(((NEW PICS)))

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Pete, Mar 18, 2012.

  1. Pete,I hope you do not construe the "criticism" from the folks here on your chop as an insult.
It IS- well intended and coming from a good source of custom knowledge, such as Rikster.....
We all just think for all the time and work involved -everyone- should end up with the best looking results possible.
I can attest to not liking advice myself, but when it is good advice ,one should consider that ,and check out the possibilities both ways to see what it can end up like.

I'll say this -then I will back out and let you make your own bed....

My advice would be to stop where you are in your cuts and before final welding re cut the rear roof and move the rear window opening rearwards a couple three inches and in the process -correct the flow- of the roofline there.... the qtr window is a bit too short in height and length....[bunched up]
also cutting the rear half of the quarter window loose and lengthening it the 2" or so will net a big improvemnet in looks...
a slight lessening of the angle of your doortop will also help.
Having said that, I like everyone else, never want to hear of redoing anything either,

but its .......a long time ugly...... if you do not make it pretty now while still unfinished...

I should be working...but this is way more fun...here it is with a longer rear quarter window (just to satisfy my own curiosity).

Easier PhotoShopped than actually making all the changes in steel... but, I like the longer rear window too

Im on the hunt for the door tops, have a few local leads and a few other long distance leads.

I moved the rear window up and down, sloped the bottom up....but just didnt like it so I kept it the way it was. I did start making pieces for the quarter windows and the filler pieces for the rear of the roof.

    Pete-

    Pics to follow soon.

I like that last shot but not the rearward shrinking door glass.

  18. Pete, there is no need of getting other door tops and them being wasted on your chop,Just clamp and line yours- up, as you cut and form the missing part with some 1/8" bar stock and peices of sheet metal over the voids, weld and grind and no one will know it didnt grow that way......I never use other door tops on any chop I have ever done......
,not necessary and is actually more work slicing and dicing the other door chunks to fit than make them from scratch....

    SOme updates.

Spent yesterday and today at the shop, yesterday I just stared at the Merc and didnt love it.....so I made some changes today.

I lowered the front of the roof again, remember I cut 5 out of the front and then added 1 inch back in. So I re-removed the 1 inch, raised the B-pillar 1/2 inch, this brought the C-pillar up about 3 inches which gave me the sweep I needed in the rear and shortened the package tray and enlarged the quarter windows.

I still plan to keep the factory "crease" around the window.

Or something like these. Plain a simple, and don't detract from the lines of the body.

    50 buick bumperettes :)

I have always thought a set of hudson's, the shields, I think they are 49's? would look good.

Also a set of 47 caddy bumperettes with lenses put in them.

I have a set if you get interested, They're pretty rad...
