i am going through a rebuild process myself due to a very misfortunate accident.... you were probably just like me. devastated at first but, thankfull to be ok. good luck with the build. she is looking good.
when i flipped the uprights... i heated the steering arms and bent them so they were horizontal again... i didnt bend the tie rods at all, though it does have an old hurst drag-link made for a sbc oil pan in these cars... but i dont think that has effected the tie rods. wheels are tires are ford 15'' wheels with coker g78x15 bias ply tires... they are a tall tire, fills in the wheel wells good
ok.. so i got the master cylinder mounted... now, pistnbroke was right on the way this thing hangs low... i moved it up to where it should be ok... but i also had to move the pedal linkage over due to the way i have my clutch set up... but other than that, i think itll be ok! ill have pics up soon as i feel like crawing under there again in this humidity...
I moved mine up till the push rod was about 3/8" below the cross member. If I had it to do over again I'd cut a Hole in the floor and get it up above the Frame rail and bore a hole in the Cross member and install a sleeve for the Rod to pass through. The master would be under the seat so the cover on the floor would not be seen. Master Power also told me the Pedal would go through the Stock pedal Hole. There So full of Bologna, anything to get your Money. Hope your Booster/Master combo works better than mine. One more thing. Be sure to make a steel tube to run the Vaccum through. 4' of rubber hose won't get it. Good luck, The Wizzard
ya... vacuum wont be all rubber... i did notice taht the pedal doesnt even go through the hole in the floor... i thought i had something backwards... then after i moved the pedal closer to the frame(cut the spacer off at the weld and switched it spots with the pedal) it still rubbed, but it moved at least.. only had to grind off a tiny bit... bolt n go... on what car? haha... oh well, money spent, pedal is hooked up and all i have to do now is run some brake line.... hope my gas tank comes in by the weekend!...
Pics would be great. I'm slowly feeling better about using the same on my '51. Oddball what kind of clutch setup are you running? Is it close to stock through the floor?
i was looking at the motor mount set up and it looks really nice but i think you need to put a washer or some sort of metal plate between the mount and the rubber. the top photo looks as if its already digging in and when you start driving it regularly again it will want to cut thru the rubber and youll have to put more in. its easier to fix now than after you have it together.
im actually going to cut down the metal plate that came with the mounts and run that... its just sitting like that.. i did cut down the rubber so it sat a little lower because of how i have everything set up from when the front mount was installed the clutch linkage is just like factory... only i welded on a flat piece of metal onto the original with a hole drilled for use of a rod... ill have to get pics of it tomorrow...
If I were starting from scratch and had my Stock pedals I'd use them. I know the Brake pedal mounts on the master with it bolting to the frame through the Master. It also includes the Clutch pedal in the total unit. Were I going stick shift I know I wouldn't change the Pedals. I can say that now, now that I done it the Hard way thinking it was the Easy way. What I'd do is knock out the Guts of the Master and cut the back end off it. Then make a Mount for the New Master/Booster and run a Pushrod through the Old master housing to the New unit. To start with it would save me $300.oo and I'd go to Schucks and get the Correct Master myself for around $40.oo. The Wizzard
Sweet, hopefully all this works out for you so I can copy you completely! What kind of clutch setup do you have linkage, cable, or hydro? I dig, I was thinking something like that. Mounting the master furthur back and out of the way along with my clutch master. I have yet to get under there and ponder based on the fact that I'm nowehere near that point in my lack of build, but I like to have idea flowing for every piece of the puzzle.
ok... some pics everything will work right and good... i have to have the exhaust moved a bit, but other than that, it all fits. also recieved my gas tank yesterday, will be running new fuel line and installing the tank here soon... keeps getting closer every time i go out in the garage... hope to see some of you guys at hunnert!
question... those of you who have your shoeboxes lowered... in the rear, the only way i can get my wheel on and off is if i let all the air out... this what you guys do?
Looks good. I'm having trouble visualizing the brake and clutch setup. If you find yourself under there again, mind snapping a few more pics?
sure... the clutch is the arm with the grease fitting on it.. i just welded a plate onto it to connect the clutch rod onto... the brake arm has the larger rod connected to it going to the left...
got my dash cleaned up a bit and here is something that may help slowandlow.. YELLOW- that is the arm/rod that will pull back when the clutch is pressed and will then push the cluch fork to release GREEN- that is the arm/rod that goes to the pedal assembly from the pic above BLUE- that is a factory clutch piece off of a 55 or so chevy(not sure, got it from a buddy of mine) i just welded on a bracket on the frame side that will keep it level and secure... it works good i had to drill a few different holes in the green arm to get the rod in a good spot for leverage or whatever you want to call it, but that was easy enough
some updates... getting the front end cleaned up and back together... should be working on glass soon, have to get the inside cleaned up and painted. have all new exhaust put on(much nicer than the crappy pipes i made) things are going smooth, its just freakin' hot! hard to get motivated to work in the garage with no a/c my poor truck
if i am running my firestone WW they pop on fairly easily, but when i put the radials on (P205/75 R15) i have to let the air out of them. both tires are the same height but the radials are wider so it creates a problem and my car has a 5" drop all the way around.
here is some updates... while still waiting for my firewall insulation, im kinda slacking... i got the front windshied cut and installed it myself... also set the dash in to see how its going to look... the inside is all painted and the headliner is ordered soon ill be able to wire it and here it turn over for the first time in a year!
oh.. i guess i forgot to post, i acquired the 1952(i believe) ford steering wheel.. its in excellent shape, only one crack i can see and its not even bad... looks perfect in my opinion!
well, its been awhile since my last update... here is some pics of how it looks now... getting the bodywork done so i can lay a new layer of black paint... then its on to the side glass and door seals then comes the task of interior... my goal is to drive it to morris for the hunnert car pile up this year, which i dont think it will have any problem making it!
I got a set of ribbed offenhauser valve covers like yours on my 52 chevy. Ive always liked the looks of them but dont think i can run them on my 383 when i switch engines. I might if i run thick gaskets but dont think my roller rockers will clear.
I'm sure trying to get the bugs worked out and goign to put some miles on her before I attempt to drive across state.. haha... but that is my goal! we will see how it is doing by the end of the week! I will be there regardless, just might be driving my dads 53, and I'll bring my cushman so I'll have something of my own... thanks for the replies... i really enjoy this car! Dan
Been awhile since I have updated the progress on this old turd... here are some pics... I drive this car daily, unless it is raining/snowing...
