Well, weekend came and went and we didn’t get as much done as we hoped. Silas was off work Saturday, so we spent the day working on it. Did get most of the right front torn apart, but still need to install the control arm bushings and put it all back together. The shafts on the lower arms sure can be a pain to knock out. Guessing there is a trick we just don’t know yet.

Well, just now headed in the house after spending all day on the front suspension, wheel bearings, a new wheel cylinder, etc. Silas was off and my grandson went to spend the day with his dad, so we had all day. Pinky should be back on the road tomorrow after we bleed the brakes.

Pic from Sid’s shop where we borrowed one of the axle presses to use as a bushing press.

Drove it this evening and it definitely needs an alignment. Wanders pretty good.

Tonight was buff paint back to a shine, polish bumpers, put some Indian blankets on seats, and wash night. Looking better all the time.

Last night, we talked about spotting in a few places on the paint to get it all pink again. The wiper grill came off another car and the guy we got it from just spray bombed it white. There are the big spots where paint has come off, someone primed the front peak of the hood for some reason, and the right rear quarter has been hit. I figure we can fix a few small areas and spot them in to where it looks a little better. However, we will wait until we get a few more things worked out first. ;) A heater would be next on my list if it were my daily. :D

  8. No heater? Or the original one leaks?

Assuming heater core leaks according to the looped hose on the firewall. But, we haven’t even tried to figure it out yet.

  10. I had my dash and heater out of my "59 Ford which made checking the heater core a cinch. It still looked new. We pressure checked it and it held 20 psi for 10 minutes... good to go.

    Heaters are overrated.
None of my hot rods have ever had one. My wife can attest to that. It comes up a lot.

So, no heater in the produce truck?

Nope. I attempted a vintage air install. It failed miserably.

  14. well the easy solution is to build a really hot motor and make sure there is no insulation on the firewall. Its worked for my 33 for decades now, just sucks in the summer, lol.

  15. I have driven my car in sub-zero winter days and love the heater. It sucks in summer when it gets to be 90.

Pretty sure a heater won’t be an issue today considering it will be in the low 80’s on Christmas Eve. ;)

  20. Man, very cool rig. My old pickup will hopefully modify my teenage boys thinking but, at least I got them instilled with the attitude, figure it out, build it - whatever it is.

  21. The Edsel dash has some nice chrome to it. I was considering the Edsel instrument cluster for my car, but mine was in great shape. It means a lot to go down the road looking at a decent dashboard.

Good point Bret! He does sleep with a window open in the winter still.

Oh, and the car fits right in everywhere he goes.

Well, Silas has mainly just been driving the car regularly although there is still plenty to do to it. At the rate we are making progress fixing the heater, we may not need to worry about it until next fall... We do need to get a new gas tank on order, but he needs to save up some for that.

Anyway, the car started running rough about a week ago, so we decided to figure that out this past Saturday. I suspected a fuel delivery issue, but after some quick troubleshooting, that wasn’t it. So, it had to be an ignition problem. What we found was that new coil we installed back in October heading to the Gathering at the Roc was leaking oil. Seems we should have gone back and fixed the mounting before now to get it vertical like it should have been all along being oil filled. Anyway, we got another coil and got it mounted right and seems to be running fine again. So, he is back in business until the next thing breaks or we can make something better. :D

The more I thought about the leaky gas tank, I decided to go ahead and order a new one just now. A couple folks here on the HAMB helped me find some alternatives since they don't make a reproduction tank for an Edsel. And, after looking those over and considering which might work best, we went with the 59 Ford tank. Seems the only real difference is that the inlet pipe isn't centered like on the Edsel. But from the pics I received from @Spooky, looks like a pretty good fit to me with very little modification needed. More to come on that once we get it in. As much as gas costs anymore, keeping it inside the tank will pay for itself fairly soon not to mention any safety concerns of a leaky tank.

Yea, at minimum, it sure stinks up the shop. :D Should have the new tank in about a week, so no more gas stinky shop.

And, we can also get the exhaust re-routed some so it will quit smacking the rear axle on bumps. Whoever installed the new exhaust didn't worry much about getting the kick up centered over the axle. That wasn't really an issue until we lowered it. Anyway, fixing the gas leak will allow us to do some welding and re-routing of that to clean it up some.

We will build our exhaust on Kim’s 55 around the car being slammed. I just need to find that flat exhaust tubing now…
