Here are the engine and interior pics as requested. Needs some cleanup, but all there.

What polish did you use on the grill? Great car by the way.

Just using some 3M rubbing compound since it is what I have and it works ok on chrome too. I’m sure it’s not the best thing, but what I typically use. So far, all I have done is half of the mustache and the bullet area. I haven’t polished any teeth yet. I did do all the chrome on the rear I guess too. It is about 200% humidity today with no breeze and polishing the teeth isn’t much fun. :D

Invest in a couple of tubes of " FLITZ "
You will be amazed at how good it is on the chrome and the stainless steel !

Will do! Thanks for the info. I have never had much luck with cheap chrome polishes so just used rubbing compound. I’ll try that.

Congratulations on the Buick. As we grow older a lot changes in almost every thing we do. Even cars…body styles, colors, hp, accessories, and on and on. And it’s all good as long as we’re having fun. Enjoy the ride.

Man that sucker just gets better and better! Nothing shines like old GM Chrome. I always thought GM had the best chrome. Chrysler had the worst, liked to rust and peel. What a nice car to start off with! Keep up the good work. By the way dad, can I borrow the car Saturday night? I have a date.

  12. Noxon works well on chrome. I have an old bottle of a 3M product, looks like watered down compound.

    Hello,

It started in the late 60s and early 70s as to the switch to a specific chrome polish from the ordinary car wax on/off and hope for the best. We were using Vista wax, then Blue Coral for most of our waxing needs, including chrome parts. Then the Classic Car Wax came on the scene and took over all metal surfaces for a great shiny protection look.
    upload_2022-6-7_5-59-54.png
But, as time moves on, a product we found called Simichrome Polish was used on chrome headers, exhaust pipes and other chrome plated parts. It all shined the best we ever saw chrome shine. So, Simichrome Polish followed us around for years. These days, there is less chrome on most daily drivers.

Then as choices change, technology also changed, a product called Flitz came on the market and it seemed to hit the motorcycle and hot rod arena well. The little spots of rust settling on places hard to clean daily were now definitely cleaned and polished with this new stuff. Not the hard core rust that has accumulated over years and flakes off, but surface rust that pops up now and again from weathering.

Rust on any surface, including stainless steel is not good. Stainless steel usually does not have rust, but there are different grades of stainless steel and “Rust Never Sleeps”… a title we are reminded by Neil Young. Salt air environment does quite a number on all metal surfaces, let alone chrome. The Flitz took off the rust that was overlooked on our then, daily drivers.

When we were consistently in a salt air environment, our stainless steel clips, wires, and other sailboat connection parts did get daily rust. Sitting outside in the open salt air environment is not the best, but the Flitz product worked well. It was just a part of detailing the sailboat and its metal parts that are constantly bombarded with salt air, causing anything to rust.

During this time, the products Simichrome and Flitz were the mainstays of surface rust and high gloss coatings for chrome and any other shiny parts. When we detailed those cars and our sailboats, the treatment stayed on for quite some time and did not need much. But, we always checked our sailboat stainless for wear and tear, including rust. Stainless does rust…
    upload_2022-6-7_6-1-32.png
A single wipe on-wipe off application cleans and polishes...

The constant use of a rag and Flitz was fine, but it took time. Then a product was introduced to those of us that live near the ocean and are/were constantly on the water. Nevr-Dull was a simple product already in a small handy can. They are sold nation wide in just about any store and on Amazon. It consists of a wadding soaked with their product that instantly wipes off any rust on any surface. If some of it goes on a smooth fiberglass surface or metal painted surface, it wipes off and leaves a protectant on the surface.

The neat thing is that only a small pull off piece of the wadding is necessary for usage. it made going around the sailboat and our cars easier as it gets used, it cleans, and until the big detailing with Colonite Carnuba wax, leaves a protective surface coating. Rust on stainless is usually not the case, but mentioned earlier, different conditions and surface quality will allow the rust to attack.

On our afternoon resting times after a hard day of sailing, or the next morning, we used to walk around on deck with a small handful of Nevr-Dull and wipe off our stainless products, linkages, wires and accessory parts. It was a wipe and go for a rust free attack from us against the elements.

The standard blue can is spotted easily on any polish/cleaner shelf in stores. Now, there is a similar product created or licensed by Eagle Car Products. It uses the name of Nevr-Dull, so it is just rebranded for car/hot rod users wanting only name brands from well known car parts suppliers. YRMV

Hey @jnaki , I forgot all about this stuff.
My Dad had a can of that when I was a kid. I was kind of anal about keeping my bicycle spotless and would use it all the time on the chrome...it was amazing. That one can lasted my whole childhood.

    Hey HRJ (@41 GMC K-18 + @guthriesmith ),

The tube lasts a long time since we don't need to gob it in place. The Nevr Dull is 4 years old and is the last one we purchased during our 20 year sailing adventures. There is still the stuff inside and it still has the power to wipe off plenty of stuff, although both of our daily drivers have little to no chrome.

They are all great products and have been used in our neck of the woods for plenty of years. So, they are not fly by night products. A great history and product use proves the power of the products.

    Jnaki

At this rate, the only chrome part are little things and stuff for our garage tools and projects. We have preserved a classic, designer, chrome base, glass ball lamp we purchased in San Francisco back in the late 60s. It has been with us for all of these years. At first, it was strictly Blue Coral wax. Then Classic Car Wax and now, Nevr Dull and Flitz with a dash of Colonite Carnuba Wax if necessary.
    upload_2022-6-7_7-53-10.png
It is something we first bought together 55 years ago.
    upload_2022-6-7_7-53-48.png
The chrome has been exposed to salt air, hot breezes in the summer, cold foggy weather in the winter mostly and the chrome base is just like new, when we bought it a long time ago. Flitz/Nevr Dull does the trick and Colonite Carnuba if needed.

I use Quik-Glo for chrome after seeing a demo on how well it works. It's made by a Mom & Pop operation down here just a couple hours away. A tad pricey (Leno uses it) but the price of re-chroming makes it chump change.

Comes in three grades (it's abrasive) & is water-based. You can order a small tub & they send free samples of other two grades so you can determine which works best w/o scratching. If you have a rust peck, it turns it to black oxide and seals it. Good stuff.

  18. We always used NevrDull to polish fishing lures (it was a staple in my Dad's tackle box). Ever hear of a "Ford Fender" spinning lure? I think the original company was bought out by Eagle.

    Hey @jnaki
Indeed that is a very cool lamp, and yes, up here in the environment of Seattle and being around the salt air, I find for me, that " Flitz " does an excellent job, and the "Never Dull " has a good reputation as well.
When I worked for Foss Maritime Company, all of our Tug Boats used a product called,
" Brightboy " to keep all of the brass polished and shiny, Seattle Fire Department also uses
    " Brightboy "
    Thanks from Dennis.

LOL. Between the intoxicating fumes from Testor's model car glue AND the Nevr-Dull, is it any wonder I turned out this way? (Prom pic) self4.jpg

Quick follow up on the kitten that came with the Buick. Apparently my daughter named it some Chinese food name...but, me and the boys are calling it DynaFlow (Dyna for short and because Flow is missing on the trunk emblem) since she doesn’t look anywhere near Chinese to me...

Wow looks like I’m a few pages behind in this one! But I did think of you yesterday as I was purposely taking the wrong turns on the way home from an out of town trip . C11B5A12-93DE-40D2-8A9F-22121C2E483F.jpeg BC44016E-E90E-44CE-87A8-9FBE1B066D69.jpeg

Man, that thing is becoming part of the earth it seems. Looks like it was a pretty decent car when they parked it there. Not sure I can remember what it was, but this brings to mind an old car that sat behind my grandparents house when I was in grade school. I remember it seeming like a neat car, but it was also working it’s way into the ground over time. They just kept mowing and weed eating around it.

Oh, and for anyone following along... I haven’t touched this car in a couple weeks now. Seems life has been in the way and I have also been trying to get my two-wheeled transportation road worthy to use as a daily driver (rider) since it gets closer to 50 mpg... :D I did ride it to work today which was my first time to go any distance on a bike in close to 25 years.

  30. This post reminds me of my favorite 50 Buick ever. Gary Mathern out of Des Moines built this in the 80s. It had a straight-piped straight 8 and it sounded rowdy. First pic is at KKOA Des Moines mid 80's. He painted it light purple eventually. The second pic is at the Roundup recently where it was spotted, new owner.

Get it stanced and paint the wheels, straight pipes and you're in business. 25be2e809bedd3d1d7158d36f93825a5.jpg 50buickgarymathern.jpg
