Surprised no one mentioned famous builder driver of 22jr. Famous great car. Forget where it is now, has to still be around

 

Been a member for many decades. Had to change my name by adding a 2 behind Metalmetdown bc of computer etc issues. Im still trying to find pictures of the Hicks and Conway Super Karrot orange coloured altered roadster.
Saw it in a Jackson Bros. viedeo about awful. awful fuel atereds. Lost my pics from before. Somebody help a guy out!!

That's the ONE!! Thank You. Anymore would be appreciated. Would Like to build a streetable version loosely based of this car.

 

When I saw that pic, that was the first thing I thought - a streetable version would be fantastic.

 

There was a blown version.

 

Sometimes touring was not glamorous.

 

I agree but the appearance money took the edge off that real quick. In the Midwest, and probably other areas, there were dates available for Wednesday and Friday nights and Sunday.

You would be surprised; appearance money was just enough to barely keep the car running at best. You had to drive to all of the places, eat, gas for the tow car, sleep someplace, and you had families at home to send money to.
The real saving grace was the engine had an iron crank, iron heads and other parts that were readily available and not the hand grenades that are run nowadays. A simple in/out box helped. Running 65% was favorable also. Reed and Fitzgerald had a crew consisting of... Reed and Fitzgerald.
Marcellus once was driving the pickup while Willie repaired the car in the trailer.
The appearance money helped but it was the love of the car that kept it going.

 

The number of tracks in relatively close proximity was a factor in the middle of the country and some racers took advantage of that. Two that come to mind are Stone Woods & Cook who based their operation out of Gary, IN for a number of years and T/F racer Jim Nicole ran his out of Danny Onate’s custom paint shop in Chicago. Romeo Palamides ch***is shop was a place where a team might layover after a Wednesday night at U.S. 30 in Gary and then they might be on to Bob Metzler’s Great Lakes Dragaway for Friday or Saturday night and then Oswego, IL for Sunday. Ohio, Iowa, Michigan and more had plenty of tracks to keep match racers busy.

 

..and let's not forget not all track operators were honest when it came time to pay out the money. Haggling and ****ering was sometimes the norm, and some payout was based on performance incentives. If you broke the car, not only did you have repair costs, but it may have cost you some appearance money.

 

I got to see Tony Nancy's roadster in the Three Dog Garage in Boyertown, just 40 miles from Ephrata. You gotta go there!

Love this one! Boogie Scott Bantam altered out of Louisiana. I like how he built a built a wild little hot rod without the luxury of the California speed industry nearby. He didn't even spring for mag wheels!

I find these pictures of the old AA/FAs in action both fascinating and scary at the same time. You had to be fearless with a touch of perceived immortality to wheel one...
