Unedited AI image of my request...I was asking for a Mild Custom 1951 Chevrolet Fleetline...I like this but definitely not a Fleetline and I went through a series of image's without a real passable Fleetline...It has in other requests did a Fleetline but Vintage Cars remain challenging for AI and for us that know our old stuff we can see the difference from a real Artists perspective...still admirable though for 4 images pumped out in less than a minute...

A bit of editing would improve this for sure...

Again it's funny how text is sometimes correct and other times quite foreign...

    Hey @Stogy and @jimmy six
Just a little help as a point of clarification, to those that may not know what a real Spartan Executive looks like, here are a few shots of a real Spartan Executive, that I photographed at Oshkosh a few years back.

    Thanks Dennis...
AI interprets and I am amazed but comforted it would generally need some editing to get a pass...I do see similarities both in it and the Hudson, both also had polished skins and two props

    -this was my written prompt;

create an 3/4 angle watercolor of a valley custom 39 lincoln zephyr coupe parked near a vintage mid 30s polished hudson aircraft at dusk...

Jimmy Six mentioned it looking like a Sparton and in several ways it does...I like firing it requests and to date it really doesn't deliver much you ask for without some unpredicable outcomes some being quite laughable...Certain vehicles do come out much better than others though and I do appreciate how well it does other times, it may eliminate Artists in the near future job market but I see it more as an adjustment in labor there is plenty of editing still required by Graphic Artists if one is serious about getting things correct. Because there's just some things...

That said I like that image and did the repair and got its missing prop blade on...and edited the car a bit too...

...this was created with my requested information by X's, AI creator, GROK...I like it...it is as rendered...it is amazing how many offerings it creates...the app was originally fee based but is now free...one thing of note again is that AI does is not very good OEM vintage auto renders but because both vintage Hotrods and Customs had bodies spliced and diced with other brands or fabbed panels and details these can many times be plausible. This looks like a 34 with late 30s windshield section, with a 34/5 ish chev grille up front...

I have used Bing Create for most of my presented AI but this Grok and Google Gemini have done admirable stuff...

    20250909_033748.jpg

...it's pretty obvious what this is and as I've said these are as rendered but could use a little human intervention with a visit to Photoshop...

Just to illustrate, this is what an actual Howard D.G.A. aircraft, looks like that I photographed at Oshkosh, and Hood River Oregon, years ago.
    Thanks from Dennis.

I guess not….I had the Spartan and Howard mixed up… both were high cost business air transportation of the 30’s and beautiful aircraft….. funny how the De Havilland has kept that look alive up into the 60’s. The Cessna 195 was a little lower on the list but also admired today.

Can AI correctly colorize this photo?
    Especially the car.

@Royalshifter I was wandering around over here and saw your query.
Did a quick search and one of the top places was this.
    https://imagecolorizer.com/colorize
Tried the basic one and it was poor. Tried the more elaborate one and got this.
Both were free without any info required. You might try it a few times and see if it comes up with other conclusions.
P.S. just noticed your title. Don't know how long, but congrats!

The first site with the prompt "pale pink car, gray house"
Going back and looking at these, it's funny how this program adds lighting in the background.
It seems like it's picking up damage to the print and interpreting it as lights.
This one especially has the house side windows unlit on the house, but lit in the reflection in the big window.
I wonder if this is to ID their work, like the phantom streets on old maps.
This is the only time the door hinges were picked out as chrome or White, too.

Thanks @RodStRace for doing that for @Royalshifter. Pretty admirable especially since it didn't alter anything, just colorized. I note in the Blue image the image damage was removed...did you request that?

No, Unless mentioned it was just the original image uploaded and let them do their thing with no instructions.

That one (www.krea.ai/apps/edit/colorize ) also seems to have smoothed out the pavement and lost a bit of detail in the grass. It might be interesting to explore that one more.

I figured it was a quick request, so didn't ask for them to 'fix' damage, and the main thing was to see the car in different shades.

There were a couple more that I tried. One that uploaded then required info (NO) and another that returned a really poor result, with it unable to pick out the car and house accurately, bleeding the colors all over.

I included the site addresses if @Royalshifter or anyone else wants to dive deeper. I'd guess the regulars like yourself might want to explore further with the sites and tools you have used before. This was just a first stab at it.

Well, tried that krea site again, and got a tan one much like the second one. Pressed generate again (it doesn't have prompts) and got this. Another dark color but different.
Looking at them, this one puts louvers and handles on, too!
EDIT: Also made a side and rear window! This one recognizes it as a car and adds car details, even if it doesn't know where the handle should be. The headlights are another area where you get different takes, along with the wheel finish.

Color charts for web use. I don't know if AI uses these and can be prompted to color using them, but it might be worth a try, talking to it in computer language.

    Image colorizer site again.
Tried the prompt Purple, it puked!
Tried Pale Purple and got this. Lost the grass, but it's to experiment with shades on the car, right?
So you have the primary 3, red/blue/yellow (or cream) and secondary Green/Purple, just missing a pale orange.

Nice work @RodStRace, and as you can see it has shortcomings. I did a couple using Google's Gemini...free, just ask and it doe's...results good and not so. For me as a graphic artist...something I can perfect with Photoshop rather than get AI to figure it out...

It added louvers too, took off hinges, painted grill surround, modded front bumper...trying to undo these was difficult if not impossible with AI. The Photoshop Thread Team could achieve similar...so a modern tool that can really get it but not without a skilled intervention.

Paging @Royalshifter...what color did you have in mind? Any feedback...you didn't ask for Bonneville but I just wanted to see...:)

I was surprised it threw in some 35 ford Grill details and a 36 side panel detail...it is all over the place really...but I could take it into my program and edit things. Did you submit it to the Photoshop Thread? I remember you sunk the plate out back as per WC's so again things need editing but this AI is interesting

This is what I used for the supplied image...I just imported it and made typed requests specific to what wasn't asked by Skip.

    https://gemini.google.com/

As Rod and others have said there are many apps, free with limitations with most having many levels of Subscription to access more powerful options including animation/video motion

@Stogy, My interpretation of his request is he wanted to know if AI would be able to guess correctly the original color of the car from the B&W image, or provide several guesses.
I'm not versed in the history of this car, but know that there are a few early car that the original color is unknown due to time passed and no known living witnesses. I know this car was in RJ and I read it, but I don't have the details in my head.
    EDIT:
    https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/rodders-journal-85-tooting-my-own-horn.1274514/

This might be one of those. We can guess that pale Green, Tan, Gray or other light earth tone as was common for STOCK cars of the day, but this was a custom.

I figured he would like to see a few different colors applied to the car to help make the selection. Even playing with your monitor adjustments can open up a bunch of shades once you have a basic color on a picture.

Thanks Rod, I understand that request a bit better now. That is something to figure that out AI doesn't know what a door handle or hinge is at least when I just asked...I wonder if I have that RJ...I will look...I don't have it...
