Those engines are from back in the day, so whilst they certainly cost a fist ful of dollars, they wouldn't have cost $10k ea. I just think they are the best of banger **** I have ever seen :D

I looked at putting a Pinto into a Willys for a friend. As I remember it turned the wrong way. It seemed like he would need a Vega distributer or something that went round the same as his. Or did you put a Willy in a Ford? I have not looked at a Ford as I don't have one.

Are 2.3L distributors the same as the 2,0L Pinto?

  6. Rich,

Saw a number of Pinto distributors on Espay last night- any year I should look for specifically? Also, there was a Mallory distributor for the Pinto... would that be overkill for my engine?

I used the two liter distributer. At the time I was doing this we wern't suspossed to use electronic ignitions. So I wanted a points and condenser dist. The 2.3 that I saw was electronis. The Mallory has a larger cap which helps with cross fire. The one I saw for a 2 liter was offset to clear the intake. Very close. When I had a 2 liter Pinto in the car with EVM fuel injection I had to shorten the base 1/2 inch to clear the #1 throttle body.

  8. The snubber keeps the ring gear from pushing away from the pinion. And yes I have seen where the ring gear has made contact with the snubber. I try to limit the clearance between the snubber and ring gear to .005 max. If I were running a "stock" rear end I probably would no have real concerns but I decided to do this as a precaution based on the welds on my quickchange and the cost of an original Halibrand "A" quickchange. Think about it, 4 grand and dump the clutch starting in second on asphalt.

I understand that the snubber is keeping the ring gear in it's place and wasn't suggesting that the snubber wasn't a good idea. I think it's an excellent idea and have seen them on some Pappy Hough home built quick change set ups also. I was just curious how much the ring gear does walk and if you were seeing that it was actually doing what it was meant to do. I did forget that your quick change had welding on it, which is another great reason to have it! Don't want that to fail. Thanks for the reply!

The distributor comes from the early CJs i believe it was the 143ci Hurricane engine. The part of the body that slids into the head needs to get turned down some ~.060 and the drive shaft needs the factory off center tab removed and a off center slot installed (I did mine on a verticle mill and removed the tab at the same time as machining the slot.

Anyone have tips on how to keep this style of air cleaner on a stromberg 81 without having to tap the carb top? The screw keeps vibrating loose, the cleaner falls onto the spark plugs and starts shorting out the sparkplugs. Help. I want to run my air cleaners or scoops. Everything falls off.

elrod the old trick was to attach small springs that acted as pull downs and allowed some movement same with exhaust joints

You can also put a small screw in the sleeve that goes over the throat. Nothing big and fancy needed. Use a piece of duct tape to catch the shavings as you drill the carbs top.

On tow pot set ups I sometimes safety wire the two together above the clamp. Looks official too :)

I once used a 12 point bolt and lock wired a beer can opener to the firewall.

Tech inspectors we're soooooo busy looking and laughing that they never saw the 'other mods' I'd done :D

I sold the car a couple of months back but drove it ~2,000 miles last summer with the Willys distributor. It seemed to work just fine.

a little OT, but has anyone ever seen rods wearing the side of the crank in a B motor? I think because it had too much end play or something maybe. supposed crank is junk, I am going to look at it at the shop and take pictures, would appreciate any and all comments

If it was ME, I would skin that subframe with 1mm steel sheet.

If you can get access to a gennie (aka bead roller), add a few nice beadrolls for strength

I have a few of reasons:

1 Quick, easy to work with, strong
2 If the car ever gets repowered with something other than a banger (or even with a serious banger) and fronts for full rego or for SR plates, an Engineer or the VIC TAC are probably gonna frown on a ply floor.
3 Ford Australia stopped using timber floors for a reason (and so did hotrodders)
    Just my A$0.02 worth.

    Nice project by the way.
I'm doing a 27 Roadster at present that is along similar lines, but I've gone with a 2.5 inch dropped axle, 3" ch***is kickup, and have splurged on a halibrand QC, T-5 conversion......and the worlds rustiest T roadster body.

Im a wee bit peeded off to say the least im trying to organise a banger speedster display here in New Zealand this has led to two burglaries on my home resulting in the loss of some of the parts for my motor conversion i have lost my behive oilfilter sideplate for my overhead a lucas finned oil filter a distributer [nisson electronic converted for the b motor] and a few other bits most of which i can replace thanks to Dan 4 banger and Sacramento vintage Ford however there is a cost [purchase shipping and customs] what i cant replace though is my sidedrive with waterpump and mag and front drive oil pump can anyone spare one.
Its been a life time of collecting these parts and trips to the states to collect them only to have some lowlife steal them these parts are rare to non existant here in New Zealand but i guess the worst part is that this has been done by someone in the banger comunity possably someone i considered a friend. NOW i know why no one organised a banger event here before!!!!!

cylinder number 3. The Bosch '009' distributor cap is slightly asymmetrical to retard the #3 cylinder 3-4 degrees. There is an oil cooler positioned over the number 3 cylinder restricting the air flow necessary for cooling.

  23. So are all other VW distributors (other than 009) okay to use?

RussTee, real sorry to hear that. I can only imagine that, if you get the word out, that such rare parts would soon have to resurface somewhere within the NZ scene. Best of luck finding them...

  26. A fellow I know that lives about 3 miles from me has a large collection of 4 banger and early V8 speed equipment. He joined the High Desert Roadster club that meets on Saturday mornings for breakfast. Well he got to know the guys and when a couple came to visit and look at his parts they were impressed and offered to buy some items. They got upset when he told them that everything he had he planned on using as he has several cars. They said he was just hoarding the stuff and they couldn't find any because of people like him. He has told me of his projects which stagger the mind, I hope he lives long enough. Well anyway he had an emergency about a week later and when he returned he found his shop open and the items that he refused to sell were gone plus a few more.

This kind of stuff is just BS, If a guy doesen't want to sell his stuff people shouldn't get mad. He has collected it and should be able to do with it what he wants. On the other hand I don't care much for people that have 15-20 of everthing, this is suppose to be fun.--TV

    Hi everybody.

Time to summarize banger year. It has been both up and down. Mostly down since I begun the year with a worn out banger and ended with a broken one.

Early 2009 I decided to take one of my model B engines and put it in my A coupe. The engine in that one was as mentioned worn out. A couple of piston rings where broken and the center main bearing was almost gone. So I took one of my B engines that was supposed to be gone thru by a previous owner. I found ot that it was pretty bad and the main bearings where poured of center so the starter gear and ringgear jammed. Not good. But I put it in with the Thomas head, Scintilla magneto and dual 81's that I had in the on the previous engine. Jsut switched my Winfield cam for a Jim Brierly ground cam. Damn, that engine ran like stink.... For one day. I accidently overheated it and broke a couple of piston rings. The blow by was bad. When I lifted the oil filler cap it almost sounded like oil filler tube it was an exhaust pipe. But it still ran good.... too good... I did a full throttle acceleration in first gear and shifted to second... no.. I had no second to go to anymore. Had to go to third. Then on the way home one rod bearing melted and I lost first gear too.

So I had to build a new engine. This time I went back to a model A based one. Used all the same speed parts. It ran good but nowhere close to the B engine. But I drove it most of the summer. Ran it in the hill climb during old style weekend. I think I was the 5th or 6th quickest of maybe 35 different vehicles. There is one video on youtube showing me p***ing by at 0:37.

    </EMBED>

And one video showing me at 3:40. There's a lady commenting on my mental health just after I have p***sed. I take that as a compliment.

The a couple of weeks later my crankshaft became a two piece thing. Changed it and drove a couple of more weeks until I had a very strange sound in the engine. Still ran but was a bit hard to start. Finally I tooke the head off to have a look. There is something wrong with number 4 piston and cylinder. I think it will be hard to fix.

    I'm hoping for a better 2010.

    Best regards,
    Magnus

This is the reason people bought Plymouths.
