Hot Rods The best engine you have ever had- looking back

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Roothawg, Jun 13, 2022.

  1. great stories fellas. I read everyone of them.
    I had 1946 chevy truck with a 216 engine .
traded a 1955 chevy bel air for it.
I drove that thing for about 15 years.
first 6 years was my daily driver.
    then I bought a 1964 plymouth fury.
but I still drove the truck on the weekends.
I got that truck in 1971 and sold it in 1986.
for $150. it smoked a little, but drove good.

Best engine period? 73 911RS MFI clone. Damn, that was a great engine! It made sounds like only an air cooled Porsche could make and it revved forever. I wish I had kept it.

It wasn’t really my engine at the time, but is now! It was a 312 Ford T-bird special, that my Dad and I rebuilt in about 1964. He showed me how to rebuild an engine step by step. He then told me I should be able to rebuild any engine now!
We put that engine in our 1956 Ford 1/2 ton pickup, replacing the 223 six. My first car engine and engine swap!
I could get that truck up to 50 mph on the dirt roads around the ranch and stomp the gas pedal and it would start spinning the rear wheels throwing two rooster tails of dirt fifty feet behind me! Best engine for me!

383 Mopar that I turbocharged in 1977 , it was the first engine to peg the chassis dyno at my technical college , took the turbo off and put it in a Dart and it out ran everything I came up against , by far my best 383. Also had a stage II 426 max wedge that was my most impressive looking engine and won the most rounds drag racing . Last was a 440 6 pack that was the quickest drag only engine I ever had .

Best one,was a engine I fitted together out of careful hunted down parts, most traded for.
For what I was racing, the class limit was 355= most used SBC .o30 over .
I made up ,what comes out as 348,from a 400 SBC block with spacer mains an a big"J" 327 sbc crank, n 350 polished pink rods[trim work on one side rod bolt too miss cam ] on 400 pistons{with bowel cut off top of piston> for zero deck. Big bore let valves flow better, she'd come off turns like Jack The Bear { short track oval racing giant killer]

226 flathead 6 in my 51 I had just out of high school. I absolutely abused that thing and it never complained. Still have it. Really thinking about putting it in my Model A roadster....

Probably the 371 Olds in the El Caballo. It ran very strong and consistent, all the while being tortured at the Laguna Seca, Sears Point, and other tracks. It was not radical, just strong, and having the cam done by Ak Miller and Ed Iskenderian, and the balance by Al Blazic, gave it a very personal touch..... 371olds (2).jpg
