I was planning to cut some oxen outlines from masonite, or perhaps just draw them on.

Yes, the oxen would be much better, and more historically correct.
Sometimes my history lesson needs a bit of help...

 

Well, this project took a different turn. Should be interesting.

 

The wagon cover will need to be REALLY sturdy to survive the wind at cruising speed.

I have had a radio antenna torn out of a fender doing that! I bet Jim has experience there too.
