Well, and if you are planning on some "Tommy the Greek" style striping, just have the perch cover striped....

    BINGO!!!

    Howdy AndersF!
You got it exactly! Trying hard to do it that way, but I kinda crossed myself with the louvers. It's okay though, 'cause I think if I just leave what's in the pan it'll be okay.

See, this little roll pan is something that was VERY early sixties on the showier 'Buckets. Ivo's car had one, the Big "T" had one, The Trojan "T" had one, and I can think of several others in magazines that did too. Then, by the mid to late sixties, they disappeared. I had never seen one louvered though, and that was my consternation in this deal.

I was going to post a couple of pictures to show my point, but for some reason my computer isn't happy...Again.

Quiet guy in the back chiming in again. Just back from a 2 week holiday, watched occasionally on the shoe-phone, but I don't go on holidays to play on the interwebs. Anyhoo, couple things, I loved the car-theft stories, particularily yours George. And, regarding the pan/perch cover, I like the pan, with the louvers, but I think if it were mine, I'd pitch the perch cover altogether.

That's a possibility brad2v, but I really don't like the look of a naked perch. That's one of those things that I normally will try to dress up a bit by maybe drilling a hole pattern into, or at least contouring a bit better that this one is. But, the P/O Roy insisted that I didn't spend "his" time doing that on this one, 'cause it was on his dime and that sort of stuff takes time. So, at the very least it'll get a smooth cover without louvers.

So here is the inspiration on the pan. Like I said, there were several more in the time frame that I remember, I just don't have time right now to dig them up. Then they went away... scan0009.jpg scan0006.jpg

With the striping and orange paint, this thing is gonna end up looking as much like a stripped down DeBenidictus as it is a Penry. Not that THAT is a bad thing AT ALL. The Debenidictus car was the one that really did it for me when I was 8 years old!

  12. Hey, can I throw in my throughts too guys ? I honestly believe that it is difficult to decide when one has all the different colours yelling at you. But, in saying that, I like the panel lourved and especially the way it fits right up to the radiator, the perch cover should stay but plain for any pinstriping. Now that orange coupe shown with the black and white on each lourver was just over the top and really screamed look at me, so I reckon on the KISS theory. I was attracted to the way my frame was finished when I first purchased the car so have keep it as I believe it is smooth. 317.jpg

That's a nice, uncluttered frontend setup. And here's my engine with the alternator (ZIT) moved down below. A nice, thick bracket, no chrome and will be painted black in a few days. And YES, it's time to repaint the headers. I've been slacking.

Did you notice another bit of ugly? Look again. See the spacer I'm using to move the fan closer to the radiator? UGLY!!! When this water pump goes out, I'll switch to a long pump, change pulleys and install an OEM alternator bracket. The radiator will still cool and the ugly will be gone. I'll end up with another "zit", but it'll be an "old school zit". Dare I say.... traditional? Are a points distributor in my future? Will I start a thread asking how to remove Edelbrocks name, from the front of my carb? 3 x 2's? Bias look radials? Stay tuned! Same bat channel...same bat station! Removing ugly is so damn stressful!:D

Symmetry. See how clean the invisible line from the cowl to the radiator is? Nice. Now...... back to those louvers.

Sometimes, the quest to un-ugly, is just about keeping things clean and uncluttered. Maybe not "period correct", but clean and simple.;)

  16. What if you only put the two louvers closest to the radiator on the perch cover so it continues the two theme across the front? Because they don't line up perfectly with the ones on the pan it might give it a bit of forward movement and not look too out of place.

I played with that thought last year. I'm still on the fence about using one.

Hey Kiwi! Fun sewing stuff together! Looks like an old Singer 111 narrow arm machine. Looks like your sewing binding.... Face to face, sew a half inch allowance, flip it over and sew a 5/8 allowance from the top...

Looks good man! I don't hate my long pump and alt mount that is there right now, it's just that it doesn't fit the time frame that I am shooting for with my car, and quite obviously so. The high mount long pump is actually very clean visually, as everything is tucked down and the negative space is accounted for. I'll be switching mine out soon though just so I can get back to some semblance of "period correct". I took some time last week to go through my short pump collection around here and clean one up, do a bit of grinding of casting flash and got it in primer, so I'll be ready to paint it when the temp goes below the surface of the sun in the mornings over the next couple of weeks. I do like Dana's suggestion of building a fan shroud for it. If you want to see a really neatly crafted one with a good tutorial on how it was made, check out my Buddy "Landseaandair"s thread on his Vicky build.

LONG DAY yesterday! Started out at So-Cal's second Saturday gig at 6:00 am, Then a good friend of the Phoenix group, Mealle Roeue (God, I know I just butchered her name) had a guest chef gig at a local uppity restaurant/coffee bar/wine and cheese joint in the morning.

I gotta back up and talk a bit about this gal. She is from France, and became enamored with hot rods and the life style that surrounds them. Somehow, she decided that she wanted to learn to do automotive, (more specifically, hot rod) interiors. She put out feelers on the internet for a shop that would let her intern, and my buddy Glen Kramer, who is doin' the best stuff out there today took her up on the internship. she's been here about a year now, and fell in with our "bad" crowd and is a joy to have around. Well what I didn't know, is that she is equally into cooking, and a friend of a friend that owns this somewhat "toney" bistro asked her to guest chef making her crepes...... Yum! Picture a very upscale clientele sort of afraid of all the "strange cars" in their parking lot, and bunch of car guys trying to be on their best behavior sipping coffee and scarfing delicacies as quick as she could make 'em! We looked much better after I showed everybody to hold their pinkies up as they sipped their coffee! Sometimes cultures do collide!

After that, some quick dog/dad time at the park, and off to a customer's house 30 miles away to work until about 7:30 on a '40 coupe. Clean up a bit, clean clothes and down to the Pavillions, and 5 and Diner's monthly Sock Hop... Hot rods parked on the grass, live band playing good stuff, and a 1000 car "park night" right across the street. Busy day! I'll load some pictures later.

Crepes, doggy daddy time and then sock hops, almost seems the HAMB is turning into something that resembles Facebook :D ;)

Just got home. Washout. Had a great time anyway. Would have been bad if it was the first or last time I would be going.
The only kool bucket I saw was this A phonebooth. I'd be surprised if you Chip didn't have a hand in this build. The present owner Rick said Danias Shircliff in Phoenix did the build. Rick is asking 20+ for it. SANY0109.jpg SANY0110.jpg SANY0111.jpg SANY0112.jpg SANY0113.jpg SANY0114.jpg SANY0115.jpg SANY0127.jpg

Ya, that was a bit Face Booky.... It was mostly an alibi as to why I haven't accomplished anything on my car to show this week.

Nah, I gotta say that I didn't have a hand in that one, even though it was built less than 4 blocks from my house! I'm sorry I didn't though as Daniel did great stuff on this little phone booth. Somewhere on my cluttered computer is a great picture of this and my 'bucket rolling down Lincoln blvd on the way out to the Pavillions show one night. To cool, but Daniel is about 6 tall, and he just flat didn't fit in it well with all that channel.

  27. That is a cool little A truck and adore the purple colour on the firewall. I don't get why most have to then spoil an excellent build by placing a fat squashed want-to-be '32 grille surround on it as it may be just my southern eyes, but it looks wrong. Apart from that, and I too wouldn't be able to fit into it, it is a darn good looking beast.
Now Chip, you ignore Blue Ones comments on Faceache as we sitting back in the corner of the workshop enjoys your little off track stories and that lady sounds just plain lovely. Now who was getting in the next beers ? ;);)

  28. I agree thats a brilliant little truck, along the lines I want to do as a C cab. Cant make up my mind if I like the 32 grill or not. Probably upset people here and say I like to see it with a chopped down 29 shell:eek::eek: but its a 29 so why not?
    oh and pass another beer:D

  29. I had to join this thread after reading all 110 pages! I have a 1927 T roadster that I am in the process of deuglifying as well. The builder went more towards a rat rod which isn't my thing so I'm bringing it back from that. I'm not aiming for a look from a particular era just cleaning it up and tightening bolts that the builder didn't. This is my daily driver as well, rain or shine, though it is interesting in the rain with no wipers and no fenders. It's running a 1966 289 with a c4, soon to be an AOD. Also as if that isn't difficult enough I'm working on it while living full time in a motorhome so no shop, out in the weather.(you'd think I would know better at my age). Anyway here's a couple of pics front qtr.JPG rear qtr.JPG lh side low.JPG

  30. Oh well welcome Isme, pull up a stool and park your butt for awhile and join in with the fun. Heck man, I really do admire you as that is exactly how the young fella's did it in the " Old days " . Driving them to work while still trying to accomplish that finish, and I know that some cars were driven in primer but that certainly didn't mean they were " Rat Rodz ", it was a case of getting as much as possible done in the weekend and having it drivable to go to work on Monday. You will have to start your own thread so that I can join and follow along.
