Projects The bucket of ugly! A de-uglifying thread...

  1. I believe you need to take breaks from time to time to check on what you have done and to focus on whats next. It also gives you time to find an answer to an issue you are not sure on. I take lots of breaks or just sit and look at what I have done and visualise whats next. JW

Guys that's exactly why my build took ten years. This was my first and last full build like this i've ever done. I took a lot of breaks, went to a lot of swaps to find the right parts, and worked out a lot of problems.I was building for the fun of the build. I actually never had a deadline until '88 the ninth year of the build when a friend took me to a Goodguys show. Then I set the deadline for the next year.
Everybody is different and has different skills and experiences. Some do this shit for a living and have many more contacts, skills and tools. Where it took me maybe a year to build my frame they can turn one out if a few days or less.

My breaks have been forced on me at times. Medical issues were a couple, financial was another break.
Sometimes just thinking and trying to solve a problem takes weeks before the answer comes.
The building-fabrication is the easy part. All the other stuff in between can slow one down drastically :D

my breaks are due to lack of time (business, 5 kids, etc), lack of money (same reasons)... and other projects.

an A coupe is something I've wanted since I was a kid. started gathering and horse trading parts about 5 years ago. now have or can make most everything I need.

a T, though... well hell, if I just came up with a T body (and I know where there's one), then I could have one on the road pretty fast and relatively inexpensively compared to the A (which needs a significant amount of metal work)

in the end I'll likely just keep building the A... but a T for the son's first car... hmmmm....

    Ok guys,
I have another question that has been bugging me for awhile now. Does your T bucket have a horn, what does it sound like, and where is it located? I have a couple different horn options in my garage, but haven't found a tasteful location for either. Ideas? Pictures? Thanks,

  6. Dare I say it.......gotta be a oogah horn:D no hot rod's complete without it:D mine's under the body just beside my battery

o_O Metal work you say, :D My T was and is a lot of metal work. Not what I consider a fast and easy build compared to any other early car, regardless of model.

 :D Step away from the oogah horn :D My buddy's 27 has a small horn mounted down beside the passenger side motor mount almost out of sight.

the T body I've had my eye on is an old fiberglass body... I know it wouldn't be "easy" per se, just that my A is a LOT of metalwork (pieced together from no less than 5 bodies)... so easy in comparison

  10. Mines an oogah horn as well. Unfortunately, it was mounted on the left frame well, between the radiator and the engine. Moving it under the body is on my todo list.

I vote you move it off of the car and into the nearest scrap metal recycling bin. Whenever I hear someone sound off one of those obnoxious things I cringe and want to put it someplace very dark :D:D:D

I have a generic horn mounted underneath the passenger side , don't forget a relay. In some states it'sstate law to have a horn [although I've never b

    een asked]

  13. By law here in NZ all vehicles must have a warning device, horn, so I have a modern small jappa hidden up under the dash which when tested by the Warrant of Fitness people, they all seem to try it without the engine running so it sounds loud but personally I believe if I was driving and had to sound the horn, it would be a little squeek compared to the engine and exhaust. I do have an original 6 volt Oogah horn from an A Ford all chromed up etc but I don't want to put it on the car as it is too big to hide in a safe place.

  14. I just split a horn off a set of a Chev pick-up horns, painted it black, and hung it against the engine by the left mount, practically invisible.

Black GM horn bolted to the front of a SBC....pointing down with the engine heat keeping it dry. Just find an unused taped hole in the head or block.

I had a Bumuta Bell many years back along with a uogha, but sold both off for house things back in 1965,now just a horn from old chevy van{it was free,an don't use one much. I would like a bell again, but there to high buck now

  18. This may be over simplifying it a bit but I use a horn off of a Honda motorcycle. It is very small and loud as hell.
    Just a thought.

  19. I picked up a 4'' 1930s Clear Hooters horn with stuffed internals and put a 12v modern unit inside and mounted it on the frame rail.
I used to have a Claxon Motor Horn on my 37 Willys for year but it made it sound like a clown car:( JW

  20. Now that is a brilliant idea Jeremy with the horn and certainly doesn't look out of place.
I laughed at your caption Gary as it always takes me a minute or two to find your horn, no, not that one, I'm speaking about your car, so get your imagination out of the gutter please incase somebody has their kid here at Chips Workshop Night.;);):)

    Everyone,
Thanks for the horn pictures and descriptions. I think I know what to do now with what I've got. It sounds like one of the ones I have is supposed to get tossed into a landfill??? The other one I have is like Gary's.

Well, for the most part I wrapped up the taillight project tonight. I ran out of time to make noise again, so the passenger's side still needs the welds ground smooth.

  22. Looking absolutely brilliant and you have nailed the height perfectly, a great improvement I believe Tim.

  23. Tim that looks spot on, so close to where they were but just enough to make a world of difference. You did real good. JW:cool::)

Mounting that horn and where is another decision I agonized about. It is kool as hell and really retro but it is really pretty big. You can see in my avatar (taken maybe ten years ago) it is not there. I only installed it a couple of years ago. Maybe a few years ago but who's counting. It does take away from the simplicity of the roadster's front suspension. But then it does add interest. See Paul I'm still agonizing over it.

Yeah, Gary, but I see you found a place for a certain Bonneville decal....:D

I managed to get the other Crosley steering box yesterday in between everything else that was going on at the shop. Now to source a rebuild kit or parts thereof. I wonder if Kanter lists anything...

I know Paul. Just before that I stuck on a Rat Fink sticker just below Roth's signature. Stop me before I turn it into a Kartoon Kar.

Have to agree! Just simple and no sore thumb aspect. Clean, visible, proves out just right.

I'm sure this has been posted on this thread before but we have a lot of new builders and I'm not sure they've read the whole thread. Or even if they have they probably just passed over this without giving it much thought. A lot of good info with drawings. I used this when building my roadster. It reflects a lot of Chips build and Paul it's probably what your striving for. Clean and simple. A lot like Ivo's T.
