These pictures show how Chip fits in my roadster. Surprisingly well. I had a hard time getting him out.

When was this photo taken. I think this car was orange once, I remember it for sale on Trade Me and often wonder what became of it. I think it was in a magazine too.

I totally agree about the channel depth. Thanks for the insight on the seat riser... looking forward to your tech article.

Here is a shot of the black T's interior...

  6. Yes Glen, it was originally built by Lance Walsh of Freelance Automotive ( which he has sold to become a Certifrier ) painted orange and white which personally I prefer. It is powered by an early 283 and trans. I not in that photo that it appears to be sacking a bit in the right hand suspension or it maybe just the photo angle.
You are so right Chip about the amount of channel one can get away with when building these cars. The '33 Truck I mentioned before is channeled 6" which results in a very closed cab space.

A mounting cradle for the gas tank, bolts into the bed and the tank will sit on 1/8" neoprene rubber contact cemented to the base and inside the stainless steel straps.

Wow Blue you do nice work. I just used nylon straps and am thinking replacing them with leather.

Gary, if the leather straps are tanned to make them appear to have some age on them, I think they will look very good. No doubt that the mount and straps that Larry has made for his look very good, I also think leather, properly treated, will also look good.

Glen, I do think it was orange and I took the pic last July at a Wellington swap meet. It has twin pipes up the side. JW

I like the idea of the leather straps. They would have a real vintage look.
The only drawback I could see to the leather straps might be a strength issue.
A full tank of fuel packs a bit of weight.
I wanted to be sure my tank stayed where it was supposed to be and the stainless straps should handle that.
Having the tank cradled in rubber will also ensure no vibration related rub leaks or anything like that.

It's funny, I had another friend tell me about the same amount this morning, yet my control panel over there says many more. Not sure how that whole thing works.

If I remember correctly Chip just ran his fingers through his hair once or twice and started talking.
    Fun time.

Yes he did Gary! The problem is he never shuts up!

  26. Well Blue,

I agree with both your thoughts....the leather straps do look good, and what you've built is definitely stronger. If you really want the look, why not just rivet the leather straps to the top of the straps you built?

  29. Now that was exactly what I was going to suggest, small rivets to hold the belt hidden down between the tank and the end of the bed with a buckle etc just above the bolted part. I agree though that the tank needs more than just a belt to hold it in place as although it has baffles, a 3/4 full tank of fuel will be a considerable weight sloshing about inside.

  30. This was the coolest kiwi bucket when I was a teenager.
NZ Hot Rod Magazine used it as a magazine project, and sold a two page plan of how to build one.
I saved my pennies, brought a copy, then discovered loud music and girls, so that ended that. Still have the plans, and watched over the years, as the bucket went through its changes to what you see now.
Its currently on Trade Me, for 28 grand.
