It comes from a WW2 comic book hero from Canada, Johnny Canuck, used to think it was because of the noises my car made, canuck, canuck , canuck.

Wow this thread is great. I've lived in North America for 70+ years and i just learned two things about my country and Canada from an Ugly T Bucket thread. Chip I'll bet you never thought your thread would take so many turns and cover so much territory. My mind has even been opened to enjoy and accept a wider verity of T rods and you guys know how closed minded I can be. Okay your radiators and grills are fine as long if they are slightly below your firewall and your windshield if fine as long as it isn't leaning forward. You don't know how hard that was to write. My fingers are locking up. Of course that might be from old age.

Canuck originates from much earlier than WWII according to what I've read
"Canuck" is defined as slang term meaning "a Canadian, especially a French Canadian."

Where did it originate? One theory from the Online Etymology Dictionary is that it dates back to 1835 and is a mash-up of "Canada" and "Chinook," the native tribe found in the Pacific Northwest Coast.

Another, from the Random House Dictionary, is that "Canuck" originated from "kanaka," the word used to describe a South Sea Islander, many of whom worked the fur trade on the Pacific Coast with French Canadians. "Kanaka" plus Canada eventually morphed into "Canak."

Researcher David Marchak writes that one of the first uses of the word "Canuck" in literature came in the mid-19th Century:

The earliest use of the word with the spelling we recognize today is found in "L'Acadie: or Seven Years' Exploration in British America" by James Edward Alexander, published in 1849:

We also met a lusty fellow in a forest road with a keg of whisky slung round him who called to us 'Come boys and have some grog, I'm what you call a canuck: ' a (Canadian).

Okay, I'm not sure about some "lusty fellow" offering free booze to strangers, but maybe things were different then. Wherever the word came from, by the mid 1800's "Canuck" was regularly used to describe a Canadian.

About a decade later, the word "Canuck" would enter the mainstream … and we have Uncle Sam to thank for it.

To counter that iconic U.S. political cartoon, Canadian editorial cartoonists began using the image of "Johnny Canuck," an amiable blue-collar lunk-head who stood up to Uncle Sam's bullying (even if he wasn't depicted as the sharpest saw in the forest).

  4. Kiwi, I haven't forgotten about your request for the pics of Buddy's (possibly also Bud Shannon's as well) T. I went through 3 large tubs of photo's Fri. and no luck. Made me start thinking they "might" not have survived the house fire we had in the late 80's, but at the same time, none of the pics from that were in there either, so there must be some more pics around here somewhere. I'll keep looking.

Okay all you Limie's, Kiwi's,Yank's,Osies,Canuck's Dane's, Cotton Pickers. Did I leave anybody out? Let's keep Chip's thread going.
Don't make me post another picture of my roadster. Oh yeah my avatar. Taken from the photo of me and the late great Art Gray. While I was in diapers he was racing a crate '50 Cadillac powered 32 Ford coupe at Bonneville. No that wasn't last year but might be next. He sold/gave me my "Horne" intake Manifold. He is the good looking black man on my right. I'm the ugly white guy.

Yes my roadster still had the '65 Mustang engine in it then. I guess that qualifies for modern to us.
The blue roadster belonged to Art. I think it was a Cadillac. Beautiful car.

  12. Looks like a 1932 Ford Cabriolet, with possibly a Dan Fink billet grill insert? Not sure about that though, fenders don't really look like Caddy or Deuce. Windshield frame looks more like '32 Ford, but couldn't find any deuce's with fender mount spares on both sides.

That blue roadster looks a bit like a 32 Plymouth from the front but I would say its a 33 Caddy with a different front bumper. JW

Yeah guys I guess it was a '33 Cad. but it was a hot rod. Art built hot rods. It had a late '60s early '70s 500 c.i. Cad running gear. Although I guess he was a Lincoln expert too. Another HAMBer got in touch with me after seeing the picture and said Art helped his dad restore a Lincoln. Wish I could have known him better but we only met a couple of times for me to buy some of his old Cad. engine stuff.
