I love it! But I'm a wire wheel nut <shrug>. It also features something else that has caught my eye in just the last few days...a "shorty" turtledeck. The other day I ran across this pic...

and immediately acquired a bad case of car lust. Another reason that car speaks to me...Granatelli Bros...my rear suspension is mainly Granatelli components.

I'd love to find a source of affordable shorty turtle decks...I don't even want an opening lid.

I had to fight off the urge to do something like that last winter. There was a '70s twin cam 4 valve Lotus 4cyl on the bay, that sold for only a couple hundred. If I'd have found an automatic it would have mated with, I'd be building a 4 cylinder Offy-look car.

What are those two colors? The dark plum looks close to what I used on my last MG. The cream looks like the color I've been telling my wife I want to do the top half of a 2-tone car...the lower being a root beer color.

Nope Gary, no holes! We mocked up everything under the dash so we don't have to have anything poking through. I'm with ya, keeping it CLEAN!

The maroon is a fairly standard color. Pretty sure it's in my build thread, but if not I'm happy to give it to you. The cream is just a color the wife picked out of a paint book that complemented the maroon.

Thanks brother. Here it is for those using the HAMB app (since signatures don't show): http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/index.php?threads/734383/

Here it is out in the sun today...

Damnit, app won't let me post pics right now.

I'm going to start my own thread as soon as we get started on my project, but thought I'd post a couple of "pre-build parts collecting" pics just 'cause. A while back a couple of boxes showed up on my doorstep and I thought I'd mock it all up to keep me motivated during the hot 'n' nasties.

Yup, that post that Chip had a while back with the Big Tub model got me inspired and changed my mind about going with a '34 roadster. For now. It'll be close to the model with my own ideas and Chip's guidance....okay, insistence! It'll have a MEL 430/auto and be very, very early-mid '60s. If I can swing it, it'll have a quickie rear end, but if the bank account won't handle that, either an Olds/Pontiac, Ford 9", or even ChryCo 8 3/4". I'm still contemplating colors, but I know it'll be loud and attention grabbing.

That was one reason for the Tweedy Pie-as-a-tub exercise I did last week.

I haven't decided if I will go with steel or 'glass, but I would like functioning doors (I don't clamber over the sides of T buckets like I used to...ask Chip to describe my "dancing bear on ice skates" moves when getting into his...) and a bunch of louvers in the back panel.

Paul May's was a '27, but it has the general vibe.

Towel City slicks on real mag American 5-spokes (I've had 'em for YEARS, and finally have something to use them on) for the rear and skinny's on kidney-bean Halibrands up front will be the rolling stock.

    What do you guys think?

  21. You will have to tell this dumb Kiwi what a MEL 430 is though please. But I am envious of those intakes as I have two real bad fetishes, one, wire wheels and two, multi carbed engines.

This sounds very tasty nitro. Love the wheel and tire choices, and the engine! Oh my! A "MEL" is Mercury Edsel Lincoln, whip.

Here is a little inspiration for your tub. I know a little older style build but still pretty kool.

Glad to hear that it is going to come to fruition, I have a thing for tubs, when done right and with Chip doing it for you I'm certain it will be right! ;)

Actually, it's not. It's more of a cousin of the FE family with different heads and intake (note that the intake does NOT form part of the head). Some parts interchange between the MEL and FE, but not a lot. MEL's came in 383, 410, 430, and 462 and were built from '58 to '67. 400hp from the 430 in '58 with the tri-power! The engineers tuned it down in favor of more torque in '59. The downside? The engine and trans that BenD is hauling here from Uncle Scoobies shop in Indy weighs 900lbs!!!

You might be thinking of the 368.

Oh, and the 430 found its way into some Thunderbirds from '58 - '60, too!

    A banger, too!

It's funny, but most of the T tourings I see out there are either fenderless '27s or full-fendered '23s. Aside from the Mantis, there aren't that many lowboy '23s.

If you wanted to just go ahead and buy a nice little tub ready to drive you could buy this one, and it's in Canadian dollars, a bonus right now.
