And yet another reason to show the late Dennis DeBenidictus, and my childhood friend Glen Meyer roadsters. What we used to call Competition Orange. Glen's was a Mac Truck color and as I remember not as red as the magazine shot shows it. SANY0002.jpg SANY0050.jpg

Oh and another two cars with their grills too low. Or perfect in my eye. Glen was and still is an artist and has an artists eye. Sorry that's another thread.

  6. Covico Wheel 01.JPG Chip, the T looks great! Those wheels and tires really set the tone for the era you are shooting for. Oh, and the fuel cap really is responsible for pulling it all together :D

On the orange color, I think that's a perfect choice - remember my thread on Tom Shall and his killer, ETIII shoed '46 coupe? That is an orange that I really like - I think it was straight toner but who knows? What about Vinther's coupe or the '32 roadster he built for a client in the early 90s (Mark Westrick?). Again, really nice solid orange.

I have an NOS Covico flat 3 spoke steering wheel I've been saving for a project - drilled chrome spokes and a nice orange grip that would be cool to color match.

It's actually gonna end up "Hugger Orange", but I am officially going to call it "Competition Orange" 'cause they are so damn close it's not funny. And, it'll make me feel better!

And a big "YES" Steve, I consider the gas cap "Sort of a big deal"!!!!!

Damn gang! I just took a ride home from northeast Scottsdale this afternoon, and it rides sooooooo nice with the new tire on the back I can't believe it! If thinking that the Back Firestone Grooves I have been running really aren't very "round". now if I could just settle out the front tire balance issues and get enough time to get my lever shocks done I will be in like Flynn. If you are in the Phoenix area and you want a set of the Towel City Cheaters, give me call, as I already have several guys wanting to make another order, and I get almost unbelievable shipping rates with these guys.

Chip, that wheel and tire combo really looks good. What's the width on the rear wheels?

Those last photos were well worth waiting for, and a shiny coating of Competition Orange will be perfect.
    This is getting good!

    They are an old set of Americans, 15 X8 1/2" with a 28.5" x 8" cheater slick.

  12. Chip, the new tires are looking killer on your T! What's left to finish your lever shocks? Your pictures with the T in front of your house really make me miss living in Arizona. The palo verde looks great by the way!

Lookin' the part again, was a little nervous watching you sand that wheel lip near the rails with it oscillating like that though. Nicks gotta be getting spoiled working around all that cool shit everyday.

I have always thought DeBenidictus' car was Omaha Orange, fifties/sixties fleet colour(which would mesh with the mack reference) also happens to be the colour Mopar used on the max wedge motors.

You know I don't know what color Dennis painted his T. I'm sure it was something metallic. I don't think I ever saw it. Although he and I grew up on the same street in Oakland in the '50s and his wife and I worked together for maybe thirty years he was about four years older than me and I didn't get to know him until the last few years of his life. Long after he got rid of the T.
I was referring to Glen Meyer's A roadster when I said Mac Truck Orange.

In the two photos posted, Debenidictus car looks Omaha orange, and the Model A looks like Packard Naples orange (a color I really like), but we are looking at old magazine photos reproduced on a computer screen, so realistically, who knows, and like you said, the Model A looks redder than it did in person. FWIW, Naples Orange is pretty "red". On the Debenidictus car, I have seen a shitload of colour photos of it over the years, and when I look at most of them, I think "Omaha Orange" although I have seen one shot where it looks too yellow, But seeing as the others are pretty consistant, I'd the the yellow one is probaby colour-shifted a bit.

Just a thought, is it possible that the DeBenidictus car had a pearl topcoat sprayed over Omaha Orange? That would account for a slight mettallic look.

Just a little more fuel for the fire...I just pulled out Andy Southards book to take a look at the colour photo of DeBenidictus' car on pg. 112, and he also says its Omaha Orange in the caption. Oddly enough, when I looked at it, I remembered thats where I'd seen the one photo that looked too "yellow". The original photo that appeared in Hot Rods 1967 LA Roadster show coverage is a REALLY good color match for Omaha Orange, and I have had that magazine since new, so my copy is as it appeared when it was printed.

The Meyer roadster is I'm sure Mac Truck Orange. At least that is what Glen told me in the '60s. I wouldn't be surprised if Dennis didn't have a little pearl in his paint job. It was really popular then.

One more interesting thing I never noticed before, and I have looked at that photo and scratched my head about the colour a few times. In the photo in Southards book, in plain sight, right in the foreground, theres a spotlight with a clearly visible yellow lens shining right on the door of the car! DOH! So, uh, I guess that may account for the colour being shifted a tad to the yellow side of the spectrum!!

  23. Hey Chip, were you at Steve Szymanski's shop, Industrial Chassis, with the bucket on Monday? My uncle was there picking up some bushings, and was telling me about this guy who came by in a t-bucket. As he was describing it, It sounded a lot like yours.

Dana, thats interesting. So if I'm reading you right, you mixed finely ground gold in a clear coat? How fine did you grind it, and what was it like to spray? Or did you mix it right into the base?

    Hey gang!

Thanks so much for the compliments on the tire/wheel combo. It kinda goes back to what I was talking about when I started this thread. Simple changes that give a car a sense of an era that it belongs to. Without sounding too much like Nick's Scottsdale trophy wife, it really kinda bugged me to have the Halibrands on as long as I did. I mean, they are super cool, and I'm a very lucky person to be able to have them, but they just weren't correct for this car. They look extra cool on my '29 roadster pickup that they were intended to be on. It's era date is mid fifties on all it's components, and they fit right in to the mix.

Lucky Stiff, yup! That was me! I hope your Uncle didn't think me too rude, as I jumped out of the car and ran in right away. It was the higher shade of about 110 out at that point and I had been in the car an hour already and I was a man on a mission. You get to be in a hurry after piloting something like that around here in town when it's that hot. I did notice he lingered quite awhile around the car as Steve and I talked up front for a few minutes. I promise next time I see him I'll slow down a bit!

falcongeorge, good to see you back on the board man!
