Any of you out there in HAMBsville know about these 366 chevy big blocks ? Power ,stroke, parts availablity, anything? Its in a 66 chevy.Do they compare to the 396-454 s ?Any'n all info would help school me ,thanks .
They're a tall deck version of the big block Chevy found in trucks. Some parts interchange, but blocks, intakes and such are unique. Some racers use the tall deck blocks, and spacers are available to mount standard big block Chevy intakes on these oddball engines if you choose to go that route. For the most part, they're junkyard fodder, though. Better off with a more common 396, 402, 427 or 454 to build upon.
THANKS , thats exactly what it is in a 66 mega ton truck.Thought it was a 396 then read the covers .And it has just a baby 2 barrel carb on it .
Small bore 396. Tall deck, not useful for anything performance wise. Few parts interchange. The tall deck 427 are what racers use, the 366 is useless.
Would the motor mounts/location be the same ?so if a newer chevy big block had to be dropped in ,bolt up would be the same ?thanks again this helps a ton hahha w/ this truck more like 5 ton !
all the chevy motor mounts are the same until the latest model blocks. bellhousing flange to motor mount is the same on the bbc and sbc. the bbc is longer in front of the motor mounts by about 1 1/2 inches. jerry
366s have heads with tiny "peanut" ports. The rods are same as the other truck rods, with 3/8" bolts, and they're just fine for the street. 366 cranks are dimensionally identical to the 396 and 427 cranks, but they're very tough forgings and exceptionally strong. The wall thickness of the 366 block prevents it from being turned into a 427. So, the crank and rods (and oil pan) are about all that you'd want to keep and use. Dave http://www.roadsters.com/

Some years ago, a friend of a friend had a job as a mechanic for a fleet of trucks and busses that used 366 and 427 tall deck engines. He sold us good 427 steel cranks for $40 apiece! I had two or three of them laying around at any given time...just cause they were such a good deal! He built a sick-*** Camaro drag car using the 427 tall deck block with spacers installed to run a tunnel ram and the car ran damn strong! He got the basic parts from work and added good pistons, roller valvetrain and all the other goodies! Maybe not the cheapest way to go for most, but since he had easy access to these engines...it made sense for him!
