  1. No outside bearing, that thing is wayyyyyyyyyy strong. Basically the same set up as I did on the boat tail but 10 times stronger.

That finished steering is nothing short of art!Looks quite a tactile shape. Very nice work as ever.

Yeah, it looks WAY strong for sure!

What size is the extension tubing?? Is that 1/2" plate for the arm?

  4. Yeah, 1/2"

  5. What size tubing did you weld the splined part in? I assume you tested it to see if a socket will fit in there. I used 2 3/8", and I even found a huge bearing to fit. Maybe I don't need the bearing?

Impressive work on the steering. If you don't mind me asking.. what is the resultant steering ratio, between the box, the link at the cowl and whatever you may have on the spindles? Thanx, Gary

Your attention to detail is phenomenal. I love this build. How much of a pain was it to press the bearing in straight?

WOW! What are the odds of that!? I don't know yet. Probably like 6 or 7 inches. Maybe 8. I'll see if I can get a guestament. I need to get the damn stock arm off first before I can mock it up in the cowl area. Haven't had a chance to mess with it.

  10. I'd start soaking those splines now...

  11. I used a "special" 2 1/8" tube
The steering ratio, good question, I know this box is, I was told a rare 25 to 1, normally they are 16 to 1. The ratio depends on the pitman arm length and steering arm length.
25 to 1 has 4 turns left to right, 16 to 1 has 5.75 turns left to right, if I remember correctly.
It was so easy to press that bearing in, I was amazed.

What I used on this, is a 7" pitman arm. I used 8" (center to center) on my other car and it is "too" long (hard steering).
As per Jimmy White, 6" is ideal and if you lengthen the steering arm by 1" or more even better.
Rule is, the shorter the pitman arm the easier it is, to steer.

Well alright! Great tip! Thanks for passing that along Chris! Sounds like I know what length my pitman arm will be...

Okay help me out here. I determined my length based on keeping the steering arm parallel with the radius arm to prevent bump steer.

    I am at 8 1/2".

So...do I drop the steering box to reduce the length of the steering arm or is 8.5 gonna be a big problem.

PS sorry not trying to hijack the thread....

  15. Have you driven the car, do you have bumpsteer???
Here is a steering arm I've bent (needs boxing, for strength).
Bending the steering arm up might be better than having a long pitman arm.
I've also made longer steering arms and bent them in the past, because if you bend a stock steering arm you will loose alot of length.

Cool car. Nice choice on the motor! I love to see Nailheads getting used in hot rods! They're just too cool! The body on your car looks as clean as a whistle, that's some good metal! Excellent job on the frame, too! I'm excited to see what this thing looks like finished.
