Projects The Chris Casny Coupe, Model A build pics

  1. Here is a quick update.
    HEADLIGHT BAR:
I had this chrome headlight bar laying around the shop and decided, to use it.
Since the car wont have fenders, it needed to be slightly modified.
    Stock 32 headlight bar:

    Cutting the ends:

    Cut pieces:

The ends will get some paint to prevent them from rusting
    [IMG]
The two short pieces, will be bolted (clamped for now) to the frame, and "notched" to accept the headlight bar.

After everything is in place, I tig welded the pieces, with stainless filler rod to keep thing from rusting. I have to add, the headlight bar will probably be re-plated.

  13. REAR BUMPER:
Since I'm always paranoid about somebody, lightly hitting the car, especially the back, I decided to fab a stainless steel "bumper".
I took some 7/8" SS solid round bar, and started heating and bending the material to contour the back of my car. I rounded the edges and created a very subtle V shape.
I made two brackets that were welded to the bumper and the whole thing can then be bolted to the bottom side, of the body.
After everything was done, I polished the entire unit.

  14. Nice work!!!

I hope, you'll never "use" it though ;-)

  15. I'd rather mess up the bar, than the body or paint

  16. Sure, you are right, but the bar looks so sweet...

Nice build. You do some nice work and the fact that your fabing a good part of it by yourself is just amazing. Your very talented. I can only hope that when the time comes for me to be building my rod that I have the vision you posses

I got a kick out of the shot showing the knuckle scars and the exhaust.
    Keep the progress photos coming.

  25. Chris, I look at your work and I want to go out and set fire to my '29 roadster project. But then, I've gotten so many great ideas from your thread I'm all inspired.
You are not a builder, my man, you are AN ARTIST! We are ALL learning from you. Mike

Nice bumper, actually really nice bumper especially with the SS.

    Couple things though,
the bumper is solid, so its not going to bend.
Even tubing would be hard to bend,
but if you get hit its just gonna rip out the whole rear of the body
equal or worse than without it,
probably cause it'll just transfer the force to both quarter panels and decklid,
(although leaving that bottom piece perfect!)
Right now if you were sittin in the trunk, or a girl was or something,
and your feet were on it, it would want to tweak that bottom panel anyway.

Some real life use it would get would be if you wanted to rope tow another hot rod,
or if you needed a lazy bumpstart and someone pushed you with a plastic bumpered car.
    (yeah speaking from experience...;)
Either way the body support would potentially ruin the sheetmetal.

    Maybe you already planned it,
but maybe some crushable mounts to the frame would make it a more useable bumper,
kinda at an slight angle so they give a little or something on impact, but not stretch if pulled
like most early cars made those spring steel mounts, or SS 1/2" rod or something.

Not to be picky its just you put so much effort into it and that bar is strong enough,
ya just might as well make it useable as well.

Oh yeah that scar is crazy did you get nerve damage? looks like it'd be permanently numb.
