Totally understand this. I've been running into this brick wall with a lot of our entertainers as well.

Usually I can separate it... just depends on that line, like y'all are saying,.

For this guy, I think about this whole scene. It was a part of a rebellious culture, and maybe some folks pushed that boundary a helluva lot harder than some of us are comfortable with.

  2. I’m gonna build that barn find and drive the **** out of it.
    The car, stripes, paint…….aren’t evil.
The bad never made it past the persons hand. They alone will answer and they alone are responsible for themselves.
If I crush the car, will the toasters made from it also be evil?
    Where does it stop.
The possession isn’t the focus. The focus is the person. That score has been settled. I’ll drive the car with a clear conscious

If the guy's beliefs or actions would have made me want to beat the hell out of him my answer to both your questions is a definitive YES. I wouldn't have let him touch my stuff then, and I sure as hell wouldn't touch his **** now.

One ironic thing I'm surprised nobody's mentioned: The Nazis themselves would most likely have blacklisted Kenneth's work as "degenerate art".

  6. Yes. I almost shared an article on that. The boss in Germany didn’t like certain styles of art. Even from German artists.
    Kinda ironic, don’t ya think.

I get the same feeling with some morning coffee hot rod buddies when the “n” word spews out of their pie holes. Haven’t been to coffee in a while.

Just the fact that he was mentally ill. It actually explains why the way he was.

People love to hate though. It makes them feel better about themselves.

The irony of this entire thread is that Von Dutch didn't like himself and didn't want people to like him.

People here are saying f-him. He's an a-hole. His work ****ed. That's exactly what he wanted!

So Yes Kenneth Howard hates you and you hate him.

Von Dutch is resting in peace knowing that.

It`s easy to sweep the dirt and filth under the rug. But it is better to throw it out in the open and talk about it and try to be a better person by what was wrong in the past. In the year 2000 when the Von Dutch name was branded, people talked about the name but knew nothing about the person. I told them he was a perverted man. The flame job on Betz`s El Camino had painted sperm on it that said swim towards the light. Do you tear down every confederate leader`s statue down because of what they supported in the past? No. Maybe. That`s another topic for another day. But you must know about the history which shaped this country and the changes we made in society to what we have become today. The same goes with the evolution of the Hot and Custom. And the people who built them. And how they have evolved thru time.

If I had an item, the said Kenneth Howard (Von Dutch) Hates You. I would destroy it knowing what it means now. And tell people when seeing it what it truly means and the story behind it.

It's interesting the fact that the guy loved jazz... Maybe he even wore Levi's...

It's ironic if you think that he loved the art or the products but hated the people that made them...

Just like those who appreciate his creations but dislike him...

I think he was a product of his own ignorance and of those who raised/sorrounded him...

I feel the same and usually walk away from such people…..but…words alone often do not describe who the person really is..I have a friend that throws around racist terms, but not in public. And I know for a fact he would go out of his way to help anyone in trouble…..So it can be just what they were exposed to in the past…

When you think about it, we have more than a few ***holes (to varying degrees) who became "worshiped celebrities" in the hobby. It used to grate my nerves a bit, but when you look at it, they probably helped spawn a ripple effect of new shops, cars, suppliers, interest, and different directions of car builds. Even the most flawed vessel has a purpose I suppose.

The difference in saying "n word" and the actual? Zero. As if anyone who sees that doesn't know what the dreaded term is? When that started a couple decades ago or more I actually said "Go **** yourself" aloud to the TV anchor for that same reason. A veiled way to say something derogatory.

I think I'll be done with this now because it's becoming convoluted in my honest opinion. Some people think I'm a sack o **** too because I give no quarter based on (insert your favorite cause). This topic has hopefully put some reality on the hobo stew our society is turning in to and the habit of dredging up the bads and trying to fix em now. **** all of it. Has nothing to do with our beloved cars and fellow folks who share in em. Peace out, off to **** with my 39 some more. Oh yeah, Ken Howard hates you...;)

I agree…. Closing this now, but not because we’ve had inappropriate comments. We haven’t. But because I feel responsible for keeping a really close eye on the direction of this thread and I’m about to hit a 36 hour shift of a high focus job and won’t be able too…

Really proud of this fellas. Sincerely.

You maniacs remember that little girl you threw a baby shower for at the HAMB Drags back in the hazy, sunburned years of our collective misspent youth? Well buckle your seatbelts and pour a stiff one, because that kid is now a sophomore at the University of California Santa Barbara, wading through the academic swamp as a Chemistry major. And in true California fashion, one of her electives is the “History of Surfing,” a cl*** so strange and beautiful it sounds like it was dreamed up by stoned dolphins.

Somewhere in that lecture, the professor veered into the jagged orbit of Kustom Kulture, which naturally dragged Kenneth Howard into the crosshairs. Von Dutch, the myth, the monster, the broken genius. Presley, bright eyed and unjaded, asked me what I knew about the man, and since I am incapable of keeping my mouth shut, I dropped the whole steaming bag of truth on her and pointed her toward this feature. After she finished, I gave her the rest of the story, the stuff I can’t publish yet, the things so dark and sour they’d make a buzzard throw up.

And what does she do with all this? She writes a critical ****ysis of my feature, and the thing hits me like a shot of mezcal chased with nitroglycerin. Sharp, fearless, alive. I loved it so much I had to break open this old thread just to post it.

Girl is a maverick, the dangerous kind, the best kind, the kind the world never sees coming until she’s already kicked the door down.

    Y'all better be ready...

    ***

Your piece was addressing Von Dutch, specifically what the Hulu docuseries considered his “curse” in comparison to your more character driven ****ysis insinuating accountability on part of the whole hot rod community. The docuseries focused more on how fame and greed distorted the grunge counterculture brand of Von Dutch, and you mentioned how once this had happened the community rejected it to “defend” its original legacy. Cancel culture. But then you took accountability for contributing to that, and by ‘that’ I would ***ume you mean canceling his brand for the wrong reasons. You then revealed Kenneths antisemitic character and its influence within his art, while subtly (or not so) urging the readers to come to the same conclusion as you — that they were late in realizing the real von dutch “curse” (You claimed “no accusations onto others”, but in my opinion that’s synonymous with saying “no-offense” — it implies the opposite).

What I found interesting is that you take accountability for different things throughout the piece, those being what I detailed above and also for “over posting” about von dutch. You even linked a previous article of yours talking about how he had once scammed you. I haven’t read that article, but I would ***ume you included it here as primary evidence of his poor character. But, in posting the articles you have (including this one) about Kenneth, aren’t you in turn a “carnivorous merchandiser” exploiting his brand and its popularity for profit? The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle, an article written from a place of p***ion that just so happens to make you money. I suppose that’s what journalism is all about, profiting off your take on trends, the more transgressive or shocking the better. “It’s a fascinating story of contradiction, defiance, and denial.”. That’s my favorite line of yours because it could have just as easily been written about this story. Crossing the tangled lines of hypocrisy, defying why Kenneth was originally canceled, and subconsciously denying your motivation in writing this story. I don’t mean any of this negatively, I just find the concept of hypocrisy highly paradoxical— condemning in others what it quietly excuses in itself.

All of this to say, I agree with your take on the real curse of Kenneth Howard. **** Racists.
