You could have the dial face machined into the dash (machine turning style) and put a projector bulb in the dash overhang to light the dial. Good luck with your project :)

With some electronic and step motors, it should not be too difficult to built.
But electronic knowledge is necessary ...

What about fixing the needles to the dash and make the dials move, like the early drum type speedos, except flat, flush mounted dials? It'd be harder to bump them that way.

Paint the dash flat white. Mount a projector behind you in the roof. Adjust projector to fit the dash and display info.
    Done!

get a early 90s heads up display from a caddy or lincoln, they project the gauge information onto the windshield, this way the whole dash can be smooth

heres the box <----- heres you ----->

  8. Paint the numbers on the inside of your windshield, hook up a small MGB windshield wiper to a linear actuator. run it UNDER the regular wipers so they clear...

    It's a great idea ! (I'd thought about it too...really, LOL)

Google it; there's a few ideas (albeit "expensive")to get the creative juices flowing.

Had a 57 Dodge with a rotating drum speedo. Still needed a gl*** in front for protection tho'

Pretty funny. You could fill out panel with an hour gl*** (colored sand optional) or Graylab photo timer, a bubble level, a big ammeter, a gl*** bowl fuel filter and one of those pull down handle fire alarm switches! Gary

  13. Too late I got the last pull.

    Larry,
If you dismantled the gauges you could mount them to the back side of a [panel with the needle poking through and then letter/number the panel on the front side.

Not sure if I misunderstood what anyone else said, but sorry in advance if I'm repeating someone else's idea!
Can you fab or replicate the entire dash in Plexi or Lexan? Then the "lens" would be any size, shape, etc you want or just leave the whole thing clear and print numbers on the inside.
Hopefully you know what I'm trying to explain......

  15. I spent weeks building a new dash for my 48 Ford in my avatar. started with a cut down 48 Buick wrap around with all the holes filled added a 1 inch recess to the left to slant the gauges toward the driver. when I finished it was so clean I can't bring myself to drill any holes in it. thought about dakota digital behind dark gl*** above the windshield. all I know is the dash will never have a gage, switch or ****on on it. the holes that were speedometer and clock will have contrasting speaker covers and thats all.
