I have this fantasy about driving my Willys Truck with a blown Chrysler to the track. Then changing gears and slicks to run all day long and then changing back to drive home. I have a '55 Olds Rear in there now and have plenty of ge****ts to do this. But oh man are those centersections heavy. But in the stash I have a Halibrand Champ QC the big one. I have no question about strength on these. I also have the 3" side bell pieces to put closed axle housings on it, pinion, and ring gear. I don't have a spool or posi for it yet, and a good friend has mentioned I'll need 35 spline axles for strength. So can I use 3" Ford Axle Housings out of a Lincoln/Mercury 9" cut to length? And what center do I use? all the best, Tim
I don't know about the sudden shock from a drag race launch would be a good Idea for that rear with sticky tires. Other opinions?
I have a bit more than 100K miles on my quick change with no issues. The car weighs 3100lbs and runs 10s in the 1/4. The big quickie you are talking about has a big honkin 10 inch ring gear, but the aluminum center section supports the pinion, which always makes me nervous. But, if you look back at some of the g***er cars of the 60s there were some that ran quickchanges, so they must be able to take some abuse. Hit the search ****on for info on how to set up quickies for the street. Brakes, differentials, axle tubes, etc. Lots of good threads floating around and lots of knowledgable people. I LOVE my quickchange and would never go back to a regular rear end. Good luck, -Abone. If you look close, you can see my quickie peeking out from under my Model A. Runs tens on Drag Radials with a 1.6 60ft with a 3100# car. The '34 had one too, but she only ran high 11s.
Don't know much about drag racing but on a Dirt Modified circle tracker we twisted more than one quick change jackshaft just by lifting a rear wheel while on the throttle and having it slam back down on the track. This was on a clay track with not near as much grip as asphalt.
One more thing...before I started racing mine heavily, I talked to the Thunderbeast guys from Texas. They have a cast off circle track quickie that has never been apart in their T roadster. The roadster runs like 9s or so on a big wrinkle wall slick, but the car doesn't weigh very much. After a bazillion p***es, they have no issues. So, who knows, you might spit it out on the track someday, or you might not. But you could do that with the Olds too...I say go with the quickie. Good luck, -Abone.
Some of the alky funny car guys tried quick change rears back in the early 70's. After grenading them a bunch, they changed back to regular third members. Metals are much better today than back then, so it may be ok now, especially if you are going back and forth between 1/8 mile and 1/4 tracks a lot. --- Steve ---
Thanks everybody. I'm on the hunt. I don't expect it to last forever. Not much does. A-bone that sedan is an amazing thing. all the best, Tim
Nope, that's what it has now. I have two '57's for when the '55 grenades if I end up staying with the Olds. But I'm working hard to figure the Quickie out. If you look to the rear of the picture you can see the '55 Center. This truck is swiss cheese so it'll make a really light base for this. The Quickie should handle this one, I hope. A '57 Olds should last forever as well. It's just alot more work to change the middle. All the best, Tim
I have had A Frankland big champ rearend in my 468" BBC, 4 speed, Model A pickup for 12 years now, first with Dutchman axles (JUNK) and 3 Mo. latter Mark Williams 35 spline (the best money can buy) it has a full spool, I have drag raced it , been to Bonneville 7 times,1500 mi.,and abused it every time I drive it!! I don't think you can tear that thing up ! 10 min. to go from 3.07s to 4.88s, just like a sore pecker, you can't beat em !!! Chris
I'd like to wake up this discussion because I've been wondering, so bump! Does anyone have suggestions on specific brand QC units / parts to run in a drag car? I see them for sale all the time and sometimes the price is attractive.
I ran a championship Halibrand quick change in my dragster in the 70's ,I bought it used, it came out of an alcohol funny car , my car was light but we ran it for 3 seasons never had any issues with it
