  1. Headed home around 11:30, skipped the lunch but my girlfriend suggested we head home so its not two hours of driving in darkness with a sketchy jumper wire on my dimmer switch. IMG_4220.jpg

made it to my grandparents house again, points are acting up so going to change them out, i think the wax block is finally wore out because i didnt apply enough grease. 20250907_140222.jpg

If you are wearing out ignition point rubbing blocks there may be rust or pitting on the distributor cam. next time you have the cap off check that out and maybe post a pic of it? you really can't clean those up or sand on them though as that throws off the point opening...

Look at the gap before you do anything else...if it's Ok then there's another problem. if the gap is closed up, then just open it an continue driving. And do a complete check of the distributor when you get home.

  4. wasnt the points. somethings wrong with the carb. it cant idle low now. i think the power valve blew again... the points cam was covered in dirt, i never greased (or apparently cleaned) the points cam. its now clean and greased with fresh points. the block was severely worn. heading to autozone to get another power valve because apparently the spare one i grabbed was a junk one i didnt discard.

  5. i wish i saw this earlier, i didnt even bother to check the gap

  6. i think my mechanical advance is fucked

  7. carb is fine, distributor fucked. zero power but not running rich. luckily i have a spare distributor at home.

You should be able to grab the rotor and rotate slightly and feel resistance from the advance springs. If you can’t move it, maybe it is seized. I know these pictures are of a Mallory but it should be similar. Remove the felt pc under the rotor and put a few drops of oil in there and see if it frees up

That's awesome. I remember being a teenager/young guy, and driving sketchy ass cars with my hooligan friends to shows states away. It's an incredible sense of adventure.

Great trip man. You should be proud of yourself and the car

  10. it turns and i can feel the springs, so i think the advance is good. when i replaced the points i dropped a screw and replaced it with one that was slightly too long. i bumped the starter with a screwdriver and i heard a grinding sound so i removed the screw and shortened it. i think somehow my distributor got moved back when i did that. the timing is now set to 0 or even retarded. i can drive just fine once im up to speed but no power to get me up to speed. lots of backfire.
this dictation was made possible by me, Sophie, clayton's (catofages) girlfriend/copilot

It may run hot if it is retarded... might not hurt to loosen the dist and advance (turn it clockwise) it a little

Turn over the distributor cap and look for a carbon track. Will look like a thin rust line that will jump spark under the cap and back fire.

    Often missed…….

Get a new distributor cap and check your wire clip plug ins to the cap. If the wire broke in the clip it will back fire or miss as well.

Who Rah! Just remember when you change points the gap or dwell changes timing so install points set the gap (or dwell if you have a meter) then set the timing. Glad you got it figured out.
You got the power of HAMB behind you.

The radiator cap, not the distributor cap? These guys are easy to confuse if you change subjects without a complete explanation :)

Here's an exploded view of the distributor.
Once you get back home, please remove the distributor (go online or come back here and ask for the procedure!) and remove the breaker plate and get the dropped screw out. Clean and lube things, and reinstall the breaker plate and reset the points. Typical gap for V8 points is 0.017 to 0.019 inch with the point rubbing block on one of the bumps on the center cam. We can walk you thru this.

This I skimmed through, it goes deeper than most will, pulling the gear. It should show you what's involved.
