Projects The Fathers Day Model A find

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chris, Jun 18, 2018.

  1. If you guys saw my thread last week about unearthing the 57 Cadillac, this story starts there.

I was heading to help my friend Garrett dig out his 1957 Cadillac he purchased and a guy (Mike) I haven’t talked to in years called me. After a little BS session seeing what each other was up to, he asked if I was still messing with early Fords. I said yes, bad habits die hard. He said he picked up a nice original 1929 Model A coupe 4-5 years ago and he wants to sell it. Do I know anyone who wants it. I had just pulled up to the Cadillac garage and was side tracked by that and told him I’d try to get out his way and check it out. I asked if he had a way to text pictures and he said yes.

    These are them.

So, while we were unearthing the Cadillac, I could here my phone getting text messages. When I got home I finally looked at the pictures and was kind of shocked by how nice this A was.

Friday night my family and I are heading out past Where Mike lives and I asked if I could whip by and see the A in person. He said sure so I stop by and sure enough, here tucked in the very back of his garage is one of the nicest original Morel A coupes I have ever seen. Mike had some medical issues and being 75 years old, figured the A should go down the road. He had the body up on blocks to show the frame number, engine number and title all match. We talked about a price and I figured I should get it...my only stipulation is that we can get it Sunday (Fathers day). You see, every year my dad, brother and myself do some sort of old car something on fathers day. I thought this would be perfect. So Sunday, the three of us go dig the ol A out, grab a pizza on the way home and spend a few hours bolting it back together and getting it running. I have no idea when the last time it ran was, but judging by everything I’m guessing 40-50 years. No key so we hot wired it and the fuel line from tank to firewall was cracked so we used a small funnel for Fuel. It roared to life and didn’t smoke or make any funny noises. All the lights work! The plugs actually look really clean, I think it will be a good runner. Mike never tried getting it running, he said he planned on building a hot rod out of it. The car moved back and forth in gear and the brakes work.

Anyway, that’s the ol Fathers Day A. Its build date on the firewall is June 20, 1929. So I bought it 3 days shy of it being 89 years old. Not sure of my plan yet. Probably just continue working on it and putt around and enjoy it for the time being. Would make a killer little hotrod. The body is so nice. No patch panels of funky body work. I wiped it with Gibbs so it’s a little shiny, but will dull to a nice gleam in a couple days.

  3. Not sure if congrats are in order...I'm already well beyond storage and I'm nearly out of money HAHA. But I can't resist a clean old Ford. They are getting far and few between

  4. I'll bet that texted pic of the rear floor pan is the one that got your heart beating fastest at first. Looks like there's little to none of the typical rear subrail rot. Good score.

great that he contacted you to make sure that it did not just lay dormant in storage - no matter what you do with it at least it will have a new lease on life

  20. I’ve got the carb apart and soaking in carb clean, picked up a radiator hose kit and new fuel line. I’m still amazed the lights work in this thing. And are bright!

You can also tell the approximate build date by the location of the emergency brake lever. Forward of the gear shift was only between January of 1929 and July of '29. You also have an Owens Dyneto, C2, electric wiper in the trunk. What a great find!!!

  25. That is correct, and I forgot to mention it’s this cars birthday today. June 20th, 1929 is the date on the firewall

Man, super nice old coupe! A full-fendered '28/'29 coupe is towards the top of my list of must-have hot rods.

As far as a hot rod version, @Hackman 's is my favorite:
