The first drive-in openend on june 6 1933 in camden,NJ. Soon after they sprang up all over the country, they peaked at around 6000, but now there is only around 400 still in existance
Cool tid-bit of info, and awesome picture! The drive-in here in Santa Cruz, CA just closed last year...bummer.
Aparently my great grandfather, a Finish immigrant, worked for the Hollingshead corporation in Camden and had something to do with designing the sound systems for the original drive-ins.
we had a drive-in about 6 blocks from our house and they tore it down to build a wal-mart supercenter that really*****ed. But we still have Rt 66 drive -in, about 5 miles from us.
We have a Drive-In in our car club. Well the owner is a member. We do an event there every Sunday before Labor day. Already booked the band and the movie for this year. Link to flyer http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b15/Carshowguy/CruisinTheJudy.jpg I've made it a point to hit everyone I can while they are still open. Thank God for Richard Hollingshead. Without him I'd not be an ozoner.
400 left- I took my chevy to the one in Newton Ia this past Saturday for the kick off for the Hot Rod Power tour- always go to the Grease-a-ramma in Kansas City held at the Boulavard drive inn. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL DRIVE INN
Very Cool,,,,, a shame there used to be around 57 Drive-ins in the state I think now there is 1 maybe 2 tops left and they are both in South Jersey
Very cool!! We still have one 15 minutes from Paxton in Gibson City, IL. Here is the link http://www.harvestmoondrivein.com/ Last summer there was an organized car show/cruise in there and then everyone stayed to watch the movie. I will make a posting when I hear if they will do it again.
great pic, and history we still have the silvermoon here in polk, the movies***** ( too pc) but we go from time to time..webb city ...mo.? been there nice little town,
Keller's in Dallas. Been here since the mid 60's I think. Been going there with my dad since we moved to Dallas in '82. Sorry I could not find a pic with any hotrods.
I remember taking my Mom and my 5 brothers to the drive-in Triple Feature across the river in Fayetteville NC in my 47 Plymouth 4door. We opened the back doors and put lawn chairs in front of them so everyone would be comfortable. Darn thing wouldn't start when the show ended. We had to push it out of the drive-in theatre! A local guy stopped by and told me to tap the carburetor with a hammer, did so, and started right up. Float was stuck.
there's nothing like a drive inn, we still have one in wellfleet ma,last one on cape cod. it still has the old window speakers, hope it keeps going, the kids and I love it,
The only way Drive-in Theatres will survive is if YOU patronize them. Make it a monthly fun family event, invite your friends, spread the word. It's dollars and cents that keep them open not dreams about the past.
When I was a kid we had 5 within 5 miles, now this is the only one around http://www.missiontiki.com/#/now/
