I've driven things that have true icon status. Ferrari, Duesenberg, Packard, Cadillac V-16s, Lamborghini, Jaguar, and Aston Martin just to name a few. It wasn't until Sept of 2023 I had a Flathead Ford underfoot. I was pleased, surprised a little at how it felt, and even more excited to try to get my own on the road. My expectations are simple, comfortable, easy, and less-than in regard to effort. Speed? Who cares, as this car is all about my left elbow in the window and SPG (smiles per gallon). I will say, I'm ready and have most of what I need to drop history's 2nd hot rod icon in place if it just doesn't "get it done" from behind the wheel. If I'm always last to the meet because it doesn't feel good at 65MPH, if it gives me grief beyond normal upkeep and tuning, if it makes me drop just 1 shoulder 1 time to say, "...not today, not in the mood..." fuck it. It's gone and Zora's next choice for hot rods gets plugged into it. I don't want that at all. As late to the party that I truly am I want my 59A to live up. Being a 57 model myself that really is late to the party. Once again, it's not about ET or burning rubber. Miles. Daily driver status. Ease of use. But it has to travel reasonable hiway speeds. Not 80 in the left lane but I'd be happy at a steady reliable 65 with enough left to pass now n then. A 47 Cadillac with it's 346 flatty feels just OK at 60 or 65. Sure, it'll go faster but you're gripping the wheel just a wee bit tighter and your pucker string tightens at every line over 70 on the speedo. My takes, which when coupled with $2.29 gets you a large Speedway coffee. And I'll close by recognizing the HAMB as an inimitable source of information, knowledge and experiences relating to the final goal as well as the obvious IYKYK. Some things aren't suitable for words. Yeah, kinda like the Flathead Ford.
