Priceless!!! I've been lucky enough to share this exeprience with my Dad several times in my life. Hope to do it a few more times while he is here.

  6. Really cool! You are 100% right -- why wait for years down the road when you can get him in the car, he has some fun and you both have a great memory (and video). This is what it is all about -- now you'll have something to p*** down to the next generation as well.

    My First Flathead Startup - with Mom and Dad . . . 1975 or so . . .

I was fortunate that when I got into flatheads (was 15), my Mom and Dad were super supportive and loved working with me on new engine starts, going to the drags, etc..

Here is my first flathead engine starting story. My first flathead was a 4 1/8 stroker with 3 5/16 bore (284 cubes), big Weber cam, Navarro heads -- and the most important part of the story . . . a Harman Collins dual/coil distributor (Joe Hunt set it up - but I didn't know much about it).

I didn't have an original Harman Collins dual-coil 21A Cap -- where they renumbered the cylinders, so I just wired it like a normal 21A distributor. So . . . we're ready to fire the engine on the stand, with Mom, Pops, etc -- all standing around and it tries to run, but is backfiring, popping spitting, etc . . . just a mess. (Has zoomies, so it is loud as hell, but only running on 4 cylinders). I'm frustrated, but keep trying to get it running and a big back-fire happens and the dip stick blows out and hits my Mom in the chest! Should have seen the look on her face!

Anyway - after much consternation, finally figured out that I needed to wire the cap differently (Harman Collins distributors have a different wiring pattern due to the dual coils, dual rotor, etc). Rewired it and everything ran like it should.

Great memories! My Dad has been gone about 15 years, my Mom is still alive and well . . . we cherish these old stories and fun times in the garage.

Hey thanks for all the kind words and the fond rememberences of everyone's Dads. :)

My Dad's been involved in all my builds - Old Impalas, the E-type Jag, my old MGs, always telling me what I missed, and how things are done. ;)

But the Model A and flatty are closer to him - it's the kind of stuff he had and worked on years ago. :) He was there when we dragged the body home in 06, and the flattys home in 07. It's a lot of fun to do it with him. :)

Bored - that's a great story of the dipstick flying out and hitting your Mom! Thanks.

    Thanks a lot guys.

I just stumbled onto this thread. What a great video with you and your dad!

I'd like to keep following your build. Any updates? Pictures?

    Thanks,
