I have a '49 Lincoln 337 motor, I have a chance to get a 4 spd ****** from a '43 Ford duelly that has a 6 cyl. I know a lot of old Ford parts are interchangeable but before I go on a road trip and all that I would like to know if they will mate up. Can any one help with this sort of info? Or what standard shift ****** will mate with this motor.
If the Lincoln has a standard trans bellhousing, clutch, & flywheel, the factory '49-'51 T-85 OD trans would be the easiest, strongest trans choice. They aren't real easy to find, tho ... You wouldn't want that crash box truck trans for any reason in anything driven on the highway.
I had one of those 4 speed truck trans in my 46 truck years ago. It was hooked up to a 327....trust me...you don't want it!
As suggested the older truck 4spds were not very desirable since they were non syncro with a granny first gear. From what I know about the pre '48 6 cyl you really want to double check compatibility there also. The pre '48 "G" 6 cly 3 spds did have a different case than the V8 3 spds with a different bolt pattern. To my knowledge there are no adaptors to put the 6 cyl 3 spd on a V8. I do not know if this carried over to the heavy duty 4 spd though, they may have only made the 4 spd with the V8 bolt pattern. I also do not know if the Lincoln has the same bell as the 8BA. If so then if the trans has the V8 bolt pattern you only need the 1/2 bell and starter plate from any '48-'50 truck. If not you would need the 1/2 bell and starter plate from one of the big trucks (I think they say the F6) with the big truck / Lincoln motor. Good luck, hopefully someone with more direct experience will be able to help you. You may also want to check out this site (that site also has a forum for the newer trucks that would have the big truck motors): http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum42/
First question to come to mind is: What transmission was the engine equipped with to start with? If it's truly a Lincoln (and not a Ford F-7 or 8 truck) it had either a 3 speed with O.D. (T-85 with R-11) or a G.M Hydramatic. If it was a Hydramatic, you have a BIG problem (unless you want to use a Hydramatic again.) because you'll play hell ever finding the unique bell housing, clutch and flywheel that goes with that engine. Other Ford car or Mercury won't get it. The bell, clutch and flywheel from the big trucks will do but they don't grow on trees. Now, if you DO have the stick shift version and you're lacking only the transmission, there are probably several Borg Warner boxes that would bolt up -T-10 possibly. I can give you dimensions on bolt centers if you need them.
It has a GM hydro connected to it now. Its heavy so I was looking into something else to put behind it. I really would like to put this in my Model A
