Going through the long, slow process of trying to transfer images from an ancient Samsung tablet to my current laptop...Nothing is transferring quickly. Most of my artwork images are gone forever due to a computer crash ages ago. There are hundreds of custom airbrushed t-shirts and signs that I painted I have no images of any more.
Found this random quicky marker sketch I did years ago for a Funny car team looking to move up from Sportsman/Alcohol to the Nitro/Fuel Professional world.

I’m at 11 I thought that of the barrel also, well I’ve got my shoes off and still counting. Lol

Thanks for thinking about what I know or learned along the way… I have different ways to transfer photos, writings and what ever else from one device to another. Some may be good for you and others. You will have to experiment with your devices. Practice, practice. But, here is the key… accidently erased photos and writings can be saved using a wide variety of reversal programs.

Even if a hard drive is conked out, someone may have the skills to revive it and use a recovery program to find the missing document or photo. It is still on those spinning discs or electronic flash drives, so don’t give up. It used to be large spinning discs. Now, they are about 2 inches in size. But, flash drives or SSD drives are better, but expensive.

I got an old Samsung tablet about three years ago. I was reading novels and mysteries and wanted a larger screen. But, I did not want to increase the size of the font on the tablet. Sometimes in a break between mysteries, I use the Google webpage for little news stories. As I am reading those stories, I wanted to take a screen shot of the page and save it for a later photo save or information for articles.

So, I got a cord that fit the tablet, "C" end and then a regular USB on the other end. Now, I can insert the "C" end in the tablet to the USB on the laptop end and make it go directly to the photos folder. Any screen shots are saved automatically in the photo folder of the tablet and then transferring then to the laptop is as easy as connecting the cord.

One other way to use a camera on the phone or tablet is to use it and it automatically saves to the onboard photo folder. Now, transfer those to the laptop the same way. Or, if you don't have access to the cord, then send it to your laptop Gmail address from the Gmail address webpage on the tablet. It is like sending yourself an email.

It will go over as a Jpeg, which is fine. Now, it is on your Gmail account on any device, phone, tablet, desktop computer and laptop if you have Gmail on those devices. It seems complicated, but it is simple. My wife has now learned that process and it is great. No need to carry around a flash drive or external hard drive.

One other way is to download it to a fast flash drive and take it anywhere. Name brands are usually faster and more reliable. YRMV

Note:
If you trust your friend's laptop or computer, then insert the flash drive and transfer those photos. The old flash drives used to hold dinky amounts of large MP photos/files. But, now there are larger flash drives up to 1 TB to hold everything... Yikes!

 

Every so often I read in a post about someone losing files due to a computer issue and I think about someone like @tawdler here losing artwork, and about all the amazing art that's been posted here.
I really hate to see stuff like that get lost. So I'm curious about the original hi-res full size digital art or photo files that you guys do. What's your preferred method for archiving 'em so they don't get lost forever? @jnaki seems to have a pretty fair knowledge of that (sorry, we just can't leave you alone!! ) Maybe we can all pick up some pointers.
Or maybe it's a subject for a separate O/T thread?

I have lost some stuff in the past but very little. Nothing as important as all these folks artwork. I save a lot of stuff on my computer.....photos, links to sights and personal documents/information! I have a problem, when I get a new computer (like right now) as how to move items over to the new one from the old one fairly quickly! It would take me days or weeks to move what I want to move over. I suppose one could buy an external hard drive and copy your C drive and then attach the hard drive to the new computer and move them onto that C drive? But, I don't know the actual protocol or logistics for that. Grandpa isn't an IT person!

I had photos saved on a work computer that crashed one day...had to replace it right away to keep my store going and never thought about trying to get images off the old hard drive. I had the photos saved on a thumb drive, but one day that failed as well...

Thanks for the nice compliment. I have gone through plenty of old hard drives, all the way back to the floppy disk era and each person has different needs. I once had 2000 songs from our 20 something days and I lost all of the work categorizing them, making play lists and easy access, all on a hard drive. I inserted it into a computer and the computer had just received an email with some problems on it. A nasty bug and it wiped out and deleted all songs.

A friend had great early computer knowledge and said next time put them on an external hard drive. Then make a copy and put them on another different hard drive. So, those early drives were in the GB stage and got filled up fast. But, over time, I used those small hard drives attached to my main home computer and laptops.

As the digital age came upon us, the hard drives got bigger and could hold a lot of stuff, from journals, photos, artwork, pdf files and tons of memorabilia, if you copy them, photograph them. They have to be in digital form to save to the modern external hard drives. All of those “things” are saved on two 5 tb hard drives I have at home and one 4 tb hard drive in a bank safe deposit box with important papers scanned digitally into files.

Forget the cheap, unknown company versions of hard drives. The digital age has allowed the price to come down to these prices:



Of all of the external hard drives and flash drives I had/have, none failed. Stick to the name brands and the issue is pretty much solved. The no-name brands are questionable. Cost may have something to do with failure. I have several of these external 1 TB and 2 TB hard drives that I cleaned and gave to our granddaughter for her college projects. Now, she has something to store her digital files. Also, I gave her a ton of extra flash drives from 4gb all the way to 500 gb for her small projects to transport. My storage drawer is fairly empty and they all have gone to a good cause.

Now, I have these two external hard drives for daily use and storage. They are basically the same, but with different companies. I have had them since 202o and 2024. No, they are not full, not even half full, so there are plenty of days of storage ahead. My laptop has a 2 TB hard drive and it too is not close to half full. Our theory as played into the many years of computer us. The hard drives work almost always and if they are over half full, they slow down, which is the case in transferring from one laptop to a home computer or vice versa.

So, clean out those duplicate photos or files that are no longer needed for tax purposes. 7 years and out they go…


These are now the new workhorse external hard drives that get constant uploads and cleaning. One can never have enough room to store projects, writings and photos. 5 tb is large enough and right now, they are only ¼ full. Plenty of room for uploading more “save to” items. Remember, costs are minimal as you are going to keep these for years.

Note:

Everyone has their own way to copy, paste and “save to.” The “save to” places vary and with those larger external hard drives, your home computer or laptop is always running at high performance tuned state. No lagging and waiting for something to move from one place to another.

You wouldn’t run your hot rods not tuned or running as best as they can… Computers are highly detailed machines that do the work of plenty of people and things, like old typewriters + file folders. Now, get those home computers and laptops cleaned out and make them fast again… storage is for things not used daily and bogs your activity down… YRMV

Note 2:

As far as transferring from one computer to another, no use in transferring all of the C: drive. You only need to save the files you created. The other stuff is for computer nerds and we have no clue as to how they are built or in use. We, too are old folks who just happen to start using computers with the first simple word processing, easy access to music and our saved files. But, as far as the computer talk and sentences that have go to: and other stuff on them… that is long gone for our tastes.

I recently bought a laptop for my wife. She liked the portability of it. But, since she has her “office” set up, she wanted a new home computer build and larger screen. So, now, her screen is 27 inches across. My laptop (received from my wife) is “only” 18 inches diagonally. The larger screen is better for her and she has a larger built in hard drive to start off. So, in two years, she will have 3/4ths of the drive still available… I copy and save her computer files in case of any house emergencies, on the external hard drives. Now, we can grab the “Go Bag” and leave in an flash.

We just like to speed things up on our laptops, devices and home computer units. It makes life easier to type in a journal entry than to type it on an ancient typewriter without any errors or have to use those round erasers with brushes on the ends… ha!

Note 3:

If we do have an emergency or pending emergency like we did several years ago with a fire creeping toward us, we were prepared to load up and leave. Yes, we would have lost our house and remaining files, but we have the important papers digitally saved and the “other stuff” physical stuff will have to try to stay alive until we can get back.
No, you don’t need one of these to store all of your digital stuff. Although, it would be nice to still have #3 with more power and comfort… Friday Art drawings… yes!
