IMG_2832.jpeg Ervin , before Covid a group of us drove over to Mr Starbird’s museum at Afton OK . He was working on something similar to this . It was big . It was sitting on a motor chassis if I remember correctly. Wasn’t long after the visit He had fallen and injured himself. I often wonder what became of it ? I enjoy Your artwork and imagination. Thank you for posting your work

To make this car related, this is roadside on California. State Highway 41. Heading North out of Fresno just past the 22 Mile House. unfortunately, he lost his little buddy shortly after I took this shot in another storm.

1929 Model A Pick Up built for the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class, when the street legal hot rods were still going strong at the drags… 671 supercharged SBC motor.

    Hello,,

We started our search or actually a selection for our hot rod build. My brother wanted something to use daily and also race at the local Lion’s Dragstrip. Our close friend had a 34 5 window Ford Coupe with a big Oldsmobile motor and LaSalle transmission, that was one of the fastest cars in the local high school and Bixby Knolls cruising scene.

So, as the old saying goes… “the race was on.” We had both driven in the 34 coupe and knew how fast it was. I filmed it at Lion’s Dragstrip and he had won in the A/Gas class for a couple of trophies we saw. Now, we could have built just about any type of hot rod, but the search centered on a Model A Coupe.

That got as far as me finding one in a backyard of a lady’s house covered with a canvas tarp.

We bought it and started our build. But, first, we had to get the old Model A Coupe running. So, we did and had lots of fun driving it around the neighborhood. Just as we got started, two thing happened. One, my brother’s 51 Olds sedan got sold and the Model A Coupe was in our backyard in the morning of school. By the time I got home from school, I was expecting to see the Model A Coupe and take it for another ride around the block. But, it, too was gone.

In the closed garage was a nice new shiny black 58 Chevy Impala. My brother had sold the 51 Olds to a neighborhood friend and sold the Model A to another friend, who lived across town. Now where was our Gas Coupe build?

Gone were the ideas for a nice Model A Coupe with a Paxton Supercharged SBC motor. So, we moved on for several years of racing the Impala. But, eventually, ended up building a 40 Willys Coupe with a 671 supercharged 292 c.i. SBC motor and LaSalle transmission. It was supposed to be a street legal coupe, which it was, but it was not going to be a daily driver.

Hot rod ideas have been flying in my crazy head over the years of growing up into retirement. Now, my Model A Coupe turned into a Model A Truck for another round of missing the original build idea. It never gets old drawing a Model A Coupe, Truck, Woody, Van or Sedan Delivery as that design has always stuck in my mind.

Who cares if the Model A Coupe interior space was cramped for a 6 foot tall teenager/adult. At least my wife could fit in the bucket seats easily and that would have been the cruising mode… YRMV
